Puff of blue smoke when shifting out of boost...

Well, as soon as I put Turbo up for sale she throws a tantrum. I noticed this morning on my way home that she's blowing a puff of blue smoke when I shift from boost, like above 2,000RPM. If I drive her easy and shift below 2,000RPM I don't notice anything. I checked the oil level and I can't notice any usage, at least not yet.

I really don't want to have to put everything back to stock and take it to the dealer, but it's looking like my only option.

Any ideas?

Occam's razor... What was the very last thing you touched before the problem started. Could be the dipstick seal, oil cap seal. Or it could be the rupture disc in the valve cover.

Or PCV related.... It's probably not something too serious. Any of these above issues will pull oil through the compressor.

I'm hoping it's nothing serious, but I guess I'll have to take it back to stock so the warranty can fix it. I don't want to throw parts at it.

I am not an expert...but have you looked at the intercooler tubes? I had a turbo PT Cruiser that had this symptom and the charge tubes had a good bit of oil in them. Only when the tubes were "compressed" the oil would get collected with the air and go through to be burned off in the combustion chamber causing smoke. Just an idea.

I haven't looked at the charge pipes or plugs yet. I'm taking it back to stock tomorrow and I'll have a look.

Sounds like the turbo seal. It's covered under warranty so take it in.

I believe it's my turbo going. There's no oil above the turbo all after it.

Do you mean no oil in front of the turbo in the intake tract? The PCV inlet is really just a few inches before the compressor blades so there's not a lot of room for oil, and it won't accumulate there either because there's no low spot for oil to collect.

After the turbo is a different story, there is a huge low spot (the intercooler) for oil to collect and oil going through the turbo via the PCV system is normal. A puff of smoke is not normal though so you may have something going on after all.

Yeah if I boost 8lbs or less no smoke when I decel. If I build full boost and slowly let off letting the boost come back down slowly it dosent smoke. If I build full boost then let straight off it throws a ball then clears up.

Anyone else have this issue or have resolved?!? My buddy and I have the same issue. He got his turbo replaced and same issue with the oil. In charge pipes and intake.

I only experienced this issue for one morning because I decided to swap out all the parts and put it back to stock the next day. Since I did that I haven't experienced any odd behavior from the car. I don't know if it was a fluke or what?

Mine just started doing this the other night as well, and has been since. I did an oil change the next day and there was definitely a good amount of oil in the charge pipes. Im returning to stock soon so the IC will come off.
Wasn't getting much for help with re-tuning it after my turbo was replaced, aside from you have something new $100 fee.

An observation I have had. When I changed my oil I have just put 4.0 quarts in complete. One time ago I put 4.2 quarts in as per manual. I started getting the blue puff. It was also very cold during that time as well. But with just 4.0 quarts I don't seem to get the blue puff of smoke. Could it be .2 quart over is causing this. The 4.0 total reads very close to full on my stick. The 4.2 reads like over full just a tad. So which is the better to do? As the manual states or just the 4.0? Problem was sporadic for me. Dont know if this could be the same issue for you either.

Fill it to the dipstick mark, not what the manual says. You aren't draining out ALL of the oil after a change, just the majority of it.

After installing my exhaust system I have noticed this oil smoke problem coming out of boost. I'll be checking it out this weekend since I'll be staying home.
