2012 Chevrolet Sonic Receives 35-MPG Rating For 1.8L Engine, 1.4L Gets 40-MPG

According to the EPA, the 2012 Chevrolet Sonic will receive a lower rating than GM’s optimistic 40-mpg figure. The standard model with a five-speed manual transmission, powered by a 1.8L four-cylinder with 135-hp is getting an EPA-estimated 26/35/29-mpg rating for city/highway/combined. The six-speed automatic transmission is just slightly less at 25/35/28-mpg. The 1.4L turbocharged four-cylider with 138-hp does achieve the 40-mpg rating however.

This news makes the Sonic a little more disappointing, despite its price point. Those seeking the best mpg might not even look its way, as its larger Cruze counterpart gets 25/36/29-mpg with the same 1.8L and six-speed manual transmission while the Cruze Eco with an automatic transmission gets 26/39/31-mpg. For now, the Aveo successor will have to compete on price with the base LS model starting at $13,735 while the LTZ can top out at $17,235 in hatchback form – or $17,935 for the turbocharged 1.4L.

Some I'm through half a tank and the 29 number is pretty close. I drive probably 75% highway too.

I have to say, not terribly impressed with the mpg. Then again, I'm coming from a 45mpg TDI.......

My wife's 2011 Honda CRV 4WD with 5500 miles gets 27.1 MPG currently in city driving and she's heavy on the gas.....not to impressed at all with the Sonic Mileage.....I might hold out for the 1.4 liter engine.

I looked at the TDI, they don't get what they used to. On the new Golf TDI, you pay $2000 more for the diesel engine and you only get 42 mpg** hwy.

forcing people to pony up for not only the more expensive engine, but also the higher trim to get the higher mileage car is going to leave a bad taste in peoples mouth.

also wondering why we dont see the city mileage and combined mileage for the 1.4. im betting that weight is going to prevent it from getting 30 mpg city like some of its competitors.

I am pretty sure that it won't matter for me. I have a heavy foot, so I will probably ruin the mileage on any car.

I'm with you. Granted, I'd be thrilled if it got 250 MPG, or ran on ordinary tap-water -- but, I've ordered my turbo, and going from the 25 (yeah, right) MPG 2010 Camaro to the 40 MPG Sonic ought to show me significant gas savings.

I'm sure I'm not the only one for which fuel economy is only one of many factors; I've looked at the Fiesta, the new Accent and Rio5, and other alternatives, and the Sonic suits me best in terms of visual appeal, interior roominess, and power (though, of course, we have to use that last term lightly when we're talking about a 1.4-liter ).
