2013 1.4T M/T Recall?

Hi all,

Has anyone else had a recall of their 2013 Sonic? i'm trying to find more information, according to the dealer it's for M/T only, service receipt states...

Reprogram ECM for DTC - Reduced engine power. Cause: Recall 0090.

Some of you helped me out in another thread where i was experiencing clutch burn, whilst i think a lot of that was my fault i'm wondering if this may have contributed.

Moving from stationary now certainly feels a lot more stable, previously finding the sweet spot for a smooth shift was giving me all sorts of trouble.

If you had a gutless Sonic than it would make sense you were revving higher to get going. good to hear you got it fixed.

0090 usually is the code for reduced engine power. I think this reflash only applies to the turbocharged manual transmission Sonics, and I also suspect this is the reason the auto RSs were released while already assembled manual RSs stayed in QCHold and so many were delayed in being built. (Ask me if I know of anyone with a TPW of 10/22 whose Sonic RS was not built until the week of 11/5.)

For me it would be easier to accept the delay if Chevy would just step up and state the reason instead of forcing we customers to figure out what is happening through trial and error.

Enough of my rant, I am glad the problem was resolved. And yes I believe any clutch problem should be covered by warranty but I am not a lawyer so I am not sure what you need to do other than DOCUMENT DOCUMENT DOCUMENT. (I am shouting for a reason!)

In other words, 0090 is the code identifying the problem, not the Recall Number - L -

This is an ECM reflash for a code P16f3 for 2013 Chevrolet Sonice
Equipped with 1.4L Engine (LUV) and Manual Transmission (MZ4)
ONLY

IT IS NOT A RECALL it is a service update for low power after a stall and setting a code P16f3. It can cause the setting of DTC P16F3 and limit engine power to approximately 5 mph (8 km/h) after an engine stall. Upon the next ignition, the code will clear and engine power will be restored to normal.


This is all Manual NON RS models, RS Models use a MR5 Transmission

Service update or recall, I know there is a technical difference but honestly, I while living in the real world do not see the difference.

So this service update does not apply to the manual Sonic RS. I guess we are still looking for the reason for abruptly halting manual tran RS production and keeping already builts in QCHold for several days after the auto RS builts were released.

Recall also refered to as a campaign is based on Federal Saftey Standards, This is a Service Update for customers that have concerns and to update inventory.

This is an induced issue when a customer would stall the engine with the clutch. To most people it will not happen but there was enough issue with the code setting under certain stalling conditions that it warranted a recalibration change to open the window perimeters in which the code sets. Probably now needs to meet a VSS window before code will set. (thats my guess on what was done , I didnt write the code)

The code that sets is DTC P16F3: Control Module Redundant Memory Performance

This is an internal circuit board check, Similar to a check sum error on the ECM's Processor

I'm just going on what the service invoice states, the exact words are "Cause: Recall 0090".

Whilst it might not be a true recall at least i've still got the documentation, if i run into premature clutch wear i'll probably keep it for evidence, not sure how much good it'll do but worth keeping just in case.

You mentioned the power reduced if the car stalled, but that it's cleared when the engine is restarted...do you mean restarted right after the stall or the time after that. I would attribute a lot of the trouble i've been having to some very random power differences, sometimes it's fine, other times i had to really get the throttle down to move the thing, i did stall on occasion so if i'm understanding it right this could have been at least part of the problem?

I got this code earlier tonight. I accidentally shoved it into 1st and not 3rd. Doh!!! Well it revved up to 8K and I immediately put the clutch in. The traction control light ( the car icon slipping one) and the check engine light came on. It felt like it was down on power. I turned the car off, back I and cleared the code with my SGII. It has a tiny bit more oomf to it now. Did I just ghetto tune my car? :???:

No, you money shifted your car and possibly caused damage and reset the fuel trims and other learned parameters. It'll level back out.
