500+ whp

Hey all this is a big debate among the performance world but I havent found any answers. Eventually im wanting to get a performance car. I want to buy new so figure 2013 2014 since those are the newest available with mods available. I was wanting a reliable 500+ hp car. My question is. What is a good base car? Ive considered camaro ss. Wrx sti. Evo x. 370z. I want to run a turbo on it and camaro only has supercharger kits. Those cars are all around the 30k range stock and I was wondering which would be cheapest and most reliable to make a 500+ hp daily driver. I know. Sounds dumb. But if everyone was smart then would anyone really be smart?

All of your options have a turbo from the factory or turbo kits available for them..... Considering the Mustang (not one of your options) and Camaro already have over 400 hp from the factory I would suggest one of those right off the bat. If you want a great handling car without a built block, a tuned Evo X. If you want to build a block and have a great daily drive the STi. In the end it comes down to your preference, your goal is obtainable through all your options. It just comes down to the overall goal, time and money you want to spend your project.

I just noticed this but I would most likely have to run twin turbo on a camaro or mustang. I just found kits and from what ive seen they all seem to be twin turbo. I guess one to attach to each header. That would get pricey wouldnt it?

Oh nevermind I found one from turbonetics thats single turbo although they reroute the exhaust past the cats which is good for smog inspections. But in illinois I dont have that. And that would gain a few more horses. Anyways. With just that kit (about $6k) that car made 560ish whp on 8psi which seems quite conservative. So thats a total investment of probubly 42k? Compared to an sti on a kit that would make that much (probubly less reliably no offense to sti owners) for $10k which is a total investment of about $45k. Sound about right???

I'm biased because I have a Z but I would suggest getting a 350/370Z, you can easily get 500whp out of a nice single turbo kit for 6-7K and have a car that is actually fun to drive, not terribly overweight like a camaro, has great suspension and brakes and is well balanced from factory.

I always think, if my Z had 150 extra HP it would be the perfect daily driver racecar. As it is, aside from lacking power, it's one of the most fun daily driver cars I have ever driven and i've been around a LOT of cars. You can pick up a clean 07-08 for under 15K, have it totally done for 25K tops and have a riot of a time. IJS.

I would say the EVO or STI.....just because of the AWD so take offs will be whiplashing you every time. Lol

400whp would be just enough I'd say for a DD, you would need to do a couple of things on an EVO X;

Test pipe - $300
Cat-back - $800
GT35R - $2,000
ID1000cc injectors - $500
Fuel pump - $500

All those prices are approximately than you would need a tune. Or if you can spare $20k than build the block and you should have 500whp just about.

I appreciate the input! I know 400whp would be enough but i want to go big or go home on this build so I would like to achieve 500+ on a stock block thats why im forced to shy away from the evo/sti mainly because the cost would double. I do agree with the awd aspect and I also agree with the lightweight. I will look more in debt and see what I can come up with. Thanks again for all the advice and such!

Aren't there quite a few cars that produce 500+WHP right from the factory? Wouldn't that be the most reliable?

Going from memory here but I'd think you have every brand from Chevy, Cadillac, Mercedes etc.

Or are you talking cheap? In that case I have no idea because I've never personally seen a car modified that much that would hold up for 100-200K miles and anything that has constant problems and is dead by 30K miles isn't reliable in my book.

I'd go cheap power and build an F-body Camaro/firebird. LS1 is a tough bastage, lots of mods avaialble, etc.

Then I'd take what's left of your 40+ grand budget that you were gonna spend on this and buy a motorcycle, an ATV and a beater truck with trailer to tow both.

Depending on what money's left, I'd lift the truck and buy some mudders and go wheel.

Drivetrain is perfectly reliable in those. Upgrade cooling while you're building it and it's not that bad.

I have looked at zl1 and gt500 from factory. costs about $55k I sort of prefer turbo cars though. I get superchargers are better low end but I hate the whine and i love turbo spool. Do you think that chevrolet would do a turbo zl1 for me? hahaha. gotta dream right?

That sounds like a good idea. I dont like superchargers as much as turbo. But on a new car keeping warrenty would be a bonus. I suppose it would be cheaper to buy an ss and supercharge it. $36k + $6k=$42k and would make probubly pretty close to the same power over the zl1 $55k

Inversely proportional to the pulley size on the supercharger.

I had a chance to flog a friend's modded Terminator Cobra. Oh. My. God. The noises, oh the noises it makes... The retina-detaching power is intoxicating.

In fact, I change my original opinion. Forget the F-body and buy the nicest low-mileage Terminator Cobra $18k will get you.
