Accidentally Revved My Car

Im OCD about this sort of thing and was wondering if I may have done any damage.

I was coasting to a stop light and a car was about to turn in front of me, so I went to step on the gas to speed up and VROOOOOM my engine revved high and I forgot I was in neutral. I dont know the RPM I was at but I know I definitely heard it with the radio on, and the car seems fine afterwards, but was wondering if I may have done any damage to the engine.

not an issue. if your car wasn't meant to rev that high, the rev limiter would be lower.

There's a rev limiter. Only way to over rev is to shift into the wrong gear at too high a speed

Rev limiters save engines!
I've gotten into the bad habit of holding the reverse ring in such a way that I might inadvertently just shift into reverse!

I have the automatic... I was coming to a stop playing with the manual shift mode with 30 miles on the clock, right after leaving the dealer when we bought the thing. I wanted to see if it would let me upshift to coast a little more as I approached the light. I got my + and - backwards and put it in first. Engine started screaming, as did the wife. I don't think it revved alarmingly high but I see your concern. It certainly scared me.

Should be ok, probably nothing hurt but your nerves.

dont worry.. on the parkway the other day i threw it in 2nd doing 90 mph... idk why i forced it in but it went past 8k and my car seems fine hahah

dont worry the auto deff wont let you put it into a bad gear like the manual

I would had let them turn the only time I've done it is shifting from M to drive or something I'm usually sitting on one my hands or. Playing with the buttons

So speaking of this, do the new rev limiters simply limit the throttlebody from opening more or do they still cut fuel\ignition or whatever they used to do? I'd think with drive by wire they could control it far better.


BTW, sorry to the OP but I've always had a dislike for rev limiters because I think they take some of the skill out of driving. You know, before if you messed up your engine went boom.

Now, you just look silly but no harm done.

BTW, even before rev limiters, like 1950s-60s automatics wouldn't let you downshift unless it was 100% safe.

Dang.. That's pretty crazy. Trying to downshift to 4th and overshot it, huh? **** happens.
Also.. 1.4T Hatchback > 1.8L Anything. xP

Revving it like that is only an issue on a cold engine. Like, you don't want to start it on a cold start and immediately rev it high. Even then though, it most likely won't cause problems right away, though you're drastically shortening the life of the engine. Same thing as revving 8k, it might not throw a rod right away but instead of lasting 100k+, you might only get another 30-40k out of it.
