Bad Water pump TSB / warranty coverage

I have a 2014 Chevy sonic 1.4L 6 speed with 77k miles on it. The other day I noticed the temp light came on and there was a coolant leak, also the heater stopped working. I took it into a shop (non-dealership) and they said it was a bad water pump, however, according to the shop there is some kind of extended warranty on the water pump, they suggested I take it in to the dealer and they will fix it.

My car is out of warranty, and I believe the previous owner had the water pump fixed. (I bought the car at 30k miles) Does anyone have any experience with a water pump being replaced by chevy after the warranty runs out? It seems to good to be true, but I hope this is right. I have an appointment on Monday with the dealer, and just want to know if I am understanding this correctly.

I went to the dealer, and surprisingly, the water pump replacement was covered! No out of pocket cost to me

Maybe you just squeaked in under the 5yr/100K Powertrain warranty? Newer Sonics (can’t remember the year but my 2015 is 100K) they dropped it to 5yr/60K.

GM has extended the warranty coverage on the 1.4L water pump ONLY, to 10 years/150K miles, for leaks only.
There may be model/year limits on this, dont remember, but I think most of the older model Sonic and Cruze are covered by this extended coverage.

I found this info on my warranty page at Chevy's website. I had my leaky water pump replaced earlier this year by a local dealer and my powertrain warranty had long since expired (2013 RS with over 100K miles). The repair was covered under this special TSB and I didn't have to pay anything. If you are losing coolant and can't figure out where it's going, It's probably the water pump and it wouldn't hurt to have it checked as it may still be covered even if the rest of the powertrain isn't anymore.

Perfect, so glad you guys brought this up. I have a water pump on order that I planned on doing myself. Never thought of looking if it was covered due to being over 100k on the mileage. :banana:

Nice, and always check the dealer recalls, etc...I've gotten new gas tanks and exhaust systems from northern states vehicles and its really great to not be out of pocket (well maybe except for a bit of the rental car during the repair)!

I am so happy the shop I went to took the time to check the water pump coverage and was honest enough to tell me that it would be covered by the dealer. I totally was expecting to pay out of pocket and would have never assumed there would be any kind of special coverage for something like a water pump.

I had mine go out @ 90k miles and it was covered, now today I parked the car in the garage and lo and behold its done it again!

Will they replace it again? Now it has 113k on it so its below the 150k max mileage.

Hi all my 2013 has a a small leak for the last several years and I got the letter from gm for the special coverage 10 yr 150k ..anyways I did a oil change and noticed it looks to be getting the engine wet ad have developed a squeaky pulley so I took my car into the dealer..I told them it never leaves drop on the floor but over the years I have had to add a gallon or so to it and that I want my water pump replaced..so they say they have to diagnose it around 75$ or so..I tell them it’s very clear the water pump is leaking you can see it around the pump all over is wet..anyways I drop it off and a few hrs later they call and say well we pressure tested and you have a radiator leak and s e other part was leaking can’t remember but I have replace the plastic inlet piece because it was disintegrated literally a couple of yrs ago..anyways they have a bill for 2300$ to fix my car..all I wanted was my water pump replaced because it’s leaking obviously there..and not to mention I am a mechanic for 25 yrs plus..so I am pissed right now..my radiator isn’t leaking and if it is its very minor at this point..I called Chevy customer service Wednesday while my car was still in shop needless to say I picked my car up pd the 86$ for what ever the hell they did and am waíting on Chevy to call me back..This is ridiculous...wasted my time and still need to replace the pump..was Gonig to do it myself could almost buy the pump for what I spent on it..by the way this was Hendrick Chevrolet in Shawnee Kansas..not happy at all right now

Get this they said in the report I needed a oil change ...gee I just did it 3 days ago before I took it in they didn’t look at nothing...4 spark plugs at 220$ I did that a yr ago ...dealer obviously thinks I am a sucker..all I want is my replacement water pump that is covered under the special coverage they would get there $$ from that no but they want to stick it to me for 2300$...still mad as hell about it...
