check engine light was just a loose fuel cap

Man, I wish I had discovered this forum a long time ago. Ended up getting hustled when I took my car in today to the dealership for a check engine light. The service guy made something up about a clogged sensor and recommended the fuel induction service. I had been saying no the service since 30k but As a car noob I paid for that and "replacing a clogged sensor" since I was told they were related.

Got the receipt and it didn't say anything about a "clog".
"EVAP LEAK: replaced fuel cap and cleared codes"

Felt pretty lied to but I guess I can only blame myself for not doing my own research. Shame you can't really trust people but at least this forum helped me see the dunce that I was. Feeling like an idiot can really ruin your day. Now I have to look outside the GM dealership for assistance since I feel like the next time I have an issue something similar will happen

Don't go to that dealership again. Hopefully that $100 or however much it was was worth loosing a customer. Not all dealerships are crooks. I worked as a tech at a Buick/Pontiac dealership years ago. We never charged (at least that I'm aware of) for something we didn't do. We also didn't suggest services that weren't part of GMs scheduled service.

I wish I could do this. Would it really work? meh I have one more free oil change and then I'm just going to jump ship. It's a shame, I really enjoyed going there up to now

Most dealers around here will charge $80 to $90 just to check the codes.

Some of the auto part chain stores will do it for free. If not, basic code readers are inexpensive, and the Scangauge or similar will do it. The apps and equipment for using a smart phone for additional guages and data logging likely will also do it too.

Like you said why spend $80-$90 to just read a code when you can order an Ultragauge shipped for $80 and have $10 bucks for beer.......and then you have a code reader for life and a nifty gauge to use in any car you own.

That should have been covered by warranty.

I certainly hope they didn't charge you the $100 AND submitted a warranty claim to GM for the same repair.

Neverfalter, sign up at this website and check to see if the dealership listed your cas cap replacement as warranty work.
