French Chevy Has Curb Weight of Sonic!

The curb weight listed on their website for the 1.4L LTZ is 1083kg. That equates to roughly 2400lbs which is a LOT less than the 2850 listed on Motortrend.

Im a little skeptical but anywhere close to that here in the states would be (in a high pitched girly voice) amaazzzziiing!

The Gross Vehicle Weight Load (whatever that is) is listed at 1566kg which is roughly 3450lbs. Im guessing that is the amount of weight the vehicle can handle?

that would be nice, but our version will be considerably heavier due to regs here. im still expecting the 2800 lbs here.

You think we would be able to get it down to that? I know we have stricter regulations here but what does that include? What would add that much more weight to the sonic? Hopefully something hat can be removed.

since alot of it has to do with crash worthiness and thus safety cage/other internal reinforcements, not much we can do.

maybe the car wont come in at 2800.

I am hoping it is definitely not more than 2850 fully loaded. The safety is welcome and I am sure we can remove up to 100 lbs without compromising that. Also, while the hatch looks lighter that may not be the case. I hope so, since I am leaning toward the 4 door. We cannot expect it to be 2400 lbs, the materials required are way to expensive to pull that off.

hatches are often heavier than their sedan counterparts. probably due to different reinforcenents needed in the rear, especially in those liftgates, which can be pretty heavy.

Ok, cool thanks. I hope so, I need it light because I think we will be stuck at around 200 hp with full bolt ons and my tune until a turbo upgrade is available. I like to go fast...

Full bolt ons and a tune will probably put you at 15flat. A turbo upgrade around 14.5. That's still a little slow for me. But the gas mileage will make to for that

Touch My Sonic! (or MAYBE Touch My Cruze?)

The possible Sonic weight of sub-2800 (per the French info posted above) would be very welcome. My 2005 Cobalt is still running strong, quiet and nimble @ 135K miles, but I have to look ahead. Setting Sonic aside for a moment, I had the choice down to Ford Focus vs Chevy Cruze. The chat boards are filled with negative comment about the quirky auto tranny on the Focus. Test drive of Cruze was super! But what really rang my bell about Cruze is that it is 5 Star across-the-board for Crash Protection!

My career has involved the investigation of car crashes, hundreds of them. With that experience I am a bit of a fraidy-cat about getting into a crash.

Pretty certain that a loaded Sonic hatch (no sun roof, of course) of the 1.8L non-turbo persuasion would blow my skirts up . . . esp with a sub-2800 weight which will give it superior performance over the Cruze. HOWEVER, the number of "Safety Stars" NHTSA and IIHS (Ins Institute for Hwy Safety) awards Sonic will be an important factor in my decision between Sonic and Cruze.

You know I just realized that weight wise the veloster is pretty close to the sonic. I bet he weight of the two are going to be very similar with the rims. You think the veloster will be the Sonics main competition.

The sobic weighs 2850 supposedly fully loaded and the veloster fully loaded only weighs a 100lbs less.

Indeed the safety rating of the Cruze is very welcome and comforting, I hope and think the Sonic should be similar. I saw a crash test of the hatch and it looked solid. 60% steel

Memphis, thanks for finding that!!! That is a big relief. To confirm, I searched and found the same thing for the 5-door hatch:

Poids à vide translates to Empty Weight: roughly 2400 lbs

About the US vs. Europe weight, I find this very confusing...
The perception is that Europe is a bunch of socialist, nanny states that regulate people's safety and the US has the cowboy, live recklessly, mentality...but just the opposite is true!

The Sonic was supposed to be a global platform, $ savings coming from commanality across all the cars made...

So the US regs are stricter, so they have to add some extra beams across the doors, some stiffening gussets to the chassis, heavier bumpers, etc.

Then Chevy wants to appeal to the safety concerns of Americans with small cars, so they install 10 airbags (can't tell for sure, looks like the French Aveo only has two airbags, look in the Sécurité section)

What else could be different? How much could that all weigh? 100 lbs? Hard to believe it would be more than 200 lbs extra!

Maybe I'm all wet, I'm hoping the hatch will be under 2600 lbs!

So if the Euro Aveo is 5-star safety and has 6 air-bags, what else could cause the big weight difference that some people have speculated? Is the US 5-star rating tougher than the Euro 5-star?

I can't wait for Memphis to report back on the actual weight...

The Euro standard is different, for example it measures pedestrian safety, which I guess must mean how safe a pedestrian is when hit by a car? The Euro site itself is confusing to me, but the five gold colored stars do stand out.

Here is a link to the GM explanation of the safety differences between the NA and the European versions. I see some additional weight, say fifty to a hundred pounds, but not any more.

Chevy.de (Germany) also has the curb weight of the Sonic LTZ (with the 1.8 not the 1.4t which isnt' available there).

Leergewicht = 1147 kg

That equals 2523.4lbs

In another thread they are now saying almost 2900 lbs, that can't be true. I would be happy with 2700.
