Fuel additives - what are your thoughts

I have used Lucas products in all my vehicles for over 10 years. As far as the Sonic, it might be a while. But I have the 1.4t and prefer to run 91 octane, and only from Shell. Back to the point though, unless you are running absolute $hit fuel, I dont see the need for every tank.

It says use in every tank and an overtreat will not be harmful. I dont recall the price for a bottle of the Lucas Fuel treatment, but if you use it that much (what is it like 3 oz per 10 gallons or something like that) it might be the same as running a better fuel in the long run.
This is just me, but I always over treated and put 4-5 oz/10 gals. Better yet I run at the very least 3 oz in the 5 gal tank on my bike!

premium fuel with and without a tune is better at least from my experience and many others in different forums. how much the fuel cleaner stuff works? i dont know but i do know unless im in the gehtto and need fuel by mistake i usually try to stay with shell/mobile or bp due to the detergents sound good and i know gm recommends the stuff in mobile gas

My station wants 15 cents more for 89 and 30 cents more for 93.
Does any one know if the Octane scale is linear?
If it is linear, I get 2 points benefit for 15 cents and 6 points benefit for 30 cents (or 3 times the benefit for twice the cost), which makes 93 a no-brainer if I go with higher octane.

The Sonic owners manual recommends 87 (or higher) octane 'Top Tier' fuel (Top Tier Gasoline). Top Tier fuel, according to GM, contains the right kinds/amounts of detergent additives..........the owners manual goes on to say that if you can't use Top Tier detergent fuel, add one bottle of GM Fuel System Treatment PLUS to the fuel tank at every oil change to clean deposits from fuel injectors and intake valves.
That's what the manual says about fuel quality/type, for whatever that's worth
(The Top Tier website briefly explains top tier fuels and lists retailers (chevron, exxon, shell, kwik trip, etc...) that sell top tier fuel.)

The problem in my opinion is ethanol !!! Low octane rated fuels usually have more ethanol.....so it will "gum" stuff up causing poorer mileage and less effectuate power.
Shell Gold states it has no ethanol so would of course be all right to run. As was stated by "silversurfer"....87 octane is all thats needed BUT to find lower grades of fuel without ethanol is hard to get !!
I like to run mid-grade or high-grade fuel in my bikes and vehicles just to minimize the amount of ethanol.

But when I do want to "clean" my engine..... I have used "Lucas Fuel Treatment" often....and with great sucess !!!
I have ran it in my motorcycle quite a bit. I use high-grade fuel always and put "Lucas" in every 3rd-4th tank ...just a splash ! It sure helps with cleaning up injectors and restoring loss power. (I ride a small displacement bike so I would notice this).
There are lots of things that affect fuel quality... how old is the fuel, water in fuel, dirt and other junk in fuel, so "Lucas" just helps with all that !!
I use "Lucas" in all the things with motors ,that I own. My lawnmowers, quad, truck, everything. I don't put it in all the time, just every now and then to help thing run better.

waste of money and not recommended.Gm recommends using Top Tier Detergent gasoline and adding a bottle of GM Fuel System Treatment Plus to the fuel tank at every oil change. Regular use of GM Fuel System Treatment Plus should keep the customer from having to repeat the injector cleaning procedure.

I live on the mid-Atlantic coast (Richmond VA). On every pump, of every grade, at every station (brand) a label reads "Contains 10% ethanol." I've never noticed a seperate label on the high octane gas of a single-hose pump that said the high octane didn't contain ethanol. Is that available only in Canada?

Silver- up to 5% ethanol
Bronze- up to 10% ethanol
Most other gas stations (Esso,Fas Gas,etc) now have signs stating that their gas "May contain up to 10% ethanol". It's getting hard to find fuel without ethanol now !!
