How much oil does this thing hold?

Per the owners manual.
1.4L oil capacity is 4.2 quarts
1.8L oil capacity is 4.8 quarts

With that said I have only ever put about 4 quarts in my 1.4 and it fills it to the top of the dipstick.

I was able to fit the entire 5 Liter jug of Mobile 1 Full synthetic in my 1.4L.. I started pouring slowly towards the end.. but I never overflowed.. Is this normal?

I think the manual says not to pour in the entire 5 liters. It says that extra oil could damage the engine due to excess pressure or something like that.

I put around 4.2 - 4.5

extra oil is whipped by the crankshaft as it spins, causing air bubbles. Also puts drag on the crank as well if it has to swim through oil reducing efficiency and millage.

You are only supposed to fill the oil pan/crankcase, not the entire engine. You could put a whole lot more than 5 quarts in before it would ever come out the filler tube.

You are supposed to use the dipstick to check how full the crankcase is.

The dipstick has a yellow handle on it, as below:

Besides the cavitation (air bubbles) as Lila mentioned, there is also additional pressure put on all the bearings, seals and gaskets.

If you're going to change your own oil, drain fully, add 4 quarts, check the dipstick and then add oil as needed to get the oil to the proper level on the dipstick.
