Intake Resonator?

So I was surfing around the Cruzetalk forums when I stumbled upon this:

How To Bypass the Intake Resonator

I decided to remove my airbox shortly after reading the tutorial only to find that the Sonic intake is a tad different in that the box connects to a hose rather then the metal wheel well part of the car.

Anyways, I was wondering if anyone knew if the Sonic has an Intake Resonator, and if it does, where it could possibly be? I kind of really want to try this mod out. haha

Where is it located. The only thing I can think of that would affect sound is the rubber accordion piece from the airbox to the turbo???

I don't think there is a resonator built into the intake, there is a cool air pipe that runs into the fender from the lower portion of the front of the factory airbox. However, the engineers probably used that tubes shape, length and size to affect the way the intake sounds. An intake resonator is usually a baffel or box built into or off of the intake tube. The 5.3L in my Seirra had a long tube that ran from the intake tube under the engine cover which was quite obvious, my 09 Civic Si sedan had it hidden in the driver side fender, I ended up cutting the front off of it, gutting it and using it for a scoop to pull air from the fender into the stock intake.

Stratton, is that small j hooked tube considered a resonator or just part of the intake to get the box's inlet outside of the engine bay to a cool air source and above a potential water hazard or is it truely a resonator?

Ill have to investigate now, I'm sure we have one under the bumper that the box connect to, I know the cruze has one don't see us not having one. In my sonic it looked like a horn from band or something, I expect out to look similar by the wheel

ill probably take mine out today, the inner fender piece would be considered a baffle, i already have some extra holes in my air box anyways so well see if it gets even louder haha

Not 100% sure but Im pretty sure it quiets down intake sound therefore could be considered a resonator but I dont have any tests to prove that just what I think about it..

The Cruze is considered a higher level car so they would probably put more quiting equipment in it vs the base model Sonic.

An intake resonator can affect the sound, but it's function is usually to increase the ram effect of the intake air charge, which is a good thing especially with a variable intake manifold. The charge bounces off the closed intake valve, back into the resonator and then back towards the next intake valve to open. Happens very quickly, creating 'resonance'.

Let me preface this post by stating that this is my uneducated opinion.

If the sonic 1.4 does, indeed, have an "intake resonator" (as I believe most modern cars do, in some form or another, regardless of whether or not they are assembled with a part labeled "intake resonator"), then I believe the purpose of the sonic's intake resonator is the same as the purpose of an intake resonator in most other cars: primarily to reduce audible engine noise for the comfort of driver, passenger and innocent bystanders. I believe there is commonly some confusion surrounding the term "intake" which is thrown around loosely at times. A resonator in the intake manifold functions primarily to increase flow, while a resonator in the intake ducting functions primarily to reduce noise. I think we are discussing an intake resonator of the second type, so I say that if you want more noise, cut it out, bypass it, whatever. This should make the car louder, but most likely will have little to no effect on performance, like most mods upstream of the air filter.
