Didn't see this posted anywhere. A major change is an aluminum block, didn't see if it's going to have direct injection. It'll be interesting to eventually see the OEM ECU calibration on that...

Looks like yes to DI.

A 1.5NA version of the same engine will replace the 1.8NA.

No mention of the Sonic so I suspect not until the next model year new gen.

Unfortunately its likely not going to be that easy, you'll need a new ECM as our E78s cant control the high pressure injectors that all DI engines have. That means we have to get lucky that the new OS in the Sonic's communicates properly with our BCM, ECBM, FPCM, ABS, and so on modules. Likely have to piggyback the stock ECM and feed it some signals to drive the cluster and keep the other modules happy.

I think more of a comple engine/harness/ecu swap would be in order and that's if mounting points and transmission are still the same.
The days of Frankenstein builds is for the most part gone with all the fancy computers they're putting in cars nowadays

Believe me, it wont. It sucks, but just not happening.

Even a complete engine/trans/full ECM/TCM + harness just means it will be there. Things like cluster integration, gas pedal integration, then all the electronic modules need to be addressed. Much easier to see if you can run it standalone then piggyback the stock ECM to keep the rest of the car happy.

Got an email from Chevy with all this new Cruze propaganda and noticed the pic provided was that of an RS Cruze. Is this a first or has that option always been available?

Isn't the e78 what comes in the buick regal and hd2500 that's direct injection though? Doesn't make sense that they wouldn't be capable of it when the same ecm is used in other cars with direct injection. Just food for thought.

I will never say it can't be done with anything. Just a matter of figuring it out. This is kind of like how Honda figured out to use a resistor box on their cars to run different impedance injectors. I used that same box on an old ford escort to change injectors to low impedance for bigger injectors. Just a matter of putting your brain to work. Electronics are easy to manipulate; mechanical differences, not so much.

I like the fact that they are changing and progressing in the engine lineups. My only concern is going to be the aftermarket support, or lack thereof for the 2015 and under models, as the new models will have a completely different engine setup to work with.

This isn't just a new version of our engine. My understanding is it's from a clean sheet design based on the 1.0 three cylinder from europes opel adam hatchback. Prob not an easy swap period but if they take the weight out of our cars and leave this engine tuned the same i would so be up for a 16 or 17 dusk or blue velvet four door LTZ with a six speed.:banana:

RS option has been around for at least 5 years.

I'd never take a first run engine. I'll wait a year or so and see what problems arise. It doesn't look like GM is implementing this in the sonic yet regardless. I'm just as interested in the beefier automatic transmission that it comes with as well lol

E78 can only control port injection. It was used on the 2010-2014 HD2500 6L gas trucks which are a Gen IV LSx design, no Gen III/IV LSx engine is direct injected. Buick Regal 2L uses a different ECM, the E39 and E39A (both DI ECMs). The China variant used the E37 (port injected ECM) from 09-11 with a port injected 2L.

Believe me, you cannot reprogram the E78 to use DI. Sorry, not happening as the ECM hardware physically cannot control the DI injectors. DI injectors are a completely different breed compared to PI injectors. Low vs High Impedence PI injectors can use a pull up/down box to mix and match. Think of it as comparing apples vs oranges (high vs low impedence PI injectors) vs onions (DI injector). Not even in the same (fruit) family. They're more similar to diesel injectors vs existing gas injectors.

If you wanted to figure out a way to use the E78 to drive the DI injectors through a black box of some sort then that might be possible, but also becomes a point of failure too as you're not using OEM stuff anymore. You'd have to have the E78 fire the injectors but have the black box actually fire the DI injectors.

A pretty smart design, a little busy in the rear though.

There's an RS, I'm sure there's a 6spd manual. I also read they're bringing the hatch version to the US (which may or may not bode well for the Sonic)

ScarabEpic22, yeah I'm not sure on the use or swappability of ecu's. Opel has a direct injection engine on the same platform; not sure which computer they use though. It's still just simple input output; injector drivers are cheap. I bet money I could get an arduino board with 4 driver boards attached to make a simple injection conversion. Same setup that I have on my 3d printer to run the 4 x,y,z axis motors.

Run a few wires, and voila. Could even make a plug and play harness. It's pretty simple really. Tuning would be no easy feat, but electrical motors and solenoids are simple. They are expecting a voltage to make them work; your job is to feed that voltage.It's not easy, but not rocket science.

It looks like the Megasquirt guys are using a Hyundai injector conversion box like the Honda's, so I think it's completely possible. Just food for though. =P

My guess is it will be a while, otherwise it would have been part of the launch of the Sonic Trax, which would have quelled the main criticism of that vehicle; that it needs a 'lil more oomph.
