I got the check engine light on with code P0171. I have it diagnosed from a private shop and it pulled the code P0171, so they recommend, bringing it to the dealer to have it fixed since they think the code and all the symptoms are related to the recall notice mentioned.
So I bring it to the dealership. I dropped off the car and have them do a diagnostic test. But It ends up $250 diagnosis fee?! How come it costs double now for diagnosis?!
If the car is repaired by them the total would be $1102 (including the diagnosis) if pay by cash. By credit card, there is another 4% additional.
No way, it's way too overpriced by just plugin a little computer to scan. Please note that I got the same error codes from a private shop for "free" before I head to the dealership and I told them the exact codes already.
But unfortunately, they told me the code that is not related to the recall issue even with the same code P0171 appears.
They said only the bad sensor and exhaust downpipe broke to cause the check engine light with code P0171. So the $1102+whatever fee is only replacing those two parts.
This is completely insane. Because I got all the parts direct from the dealer including gaskets which are around $200. The private shop charged labor for $100 to install and do reset. It is only a couple screws to take off and on and less than or only one hour of work.
So the dealership planning to charge $1102 for this, which is crazy high.
Of course, I ended up paying a $250 diagnosis fee, because I will not fix it there.
I do regret spending $250 for diagnosis since I have already told them the same code. I don't really know what I paid for.
I was expecting they will do the recall issue at the same time if I let them replace those two issues since the same code for the recall appears. Then for $1102 to replace two things plus the recall issue, it makes more sense.
But unfortunately, this was not happening. I am very disappointed. Dealership charge more is expected but not like this non-reasonable.
I am so sad. My car is so good and reliable. But not the dealership itself.
So people beware of the code P0171, it doesn't mean that is related to the recall notice you lately received. So you better fix it at your local shop and do the reimbursement claim later on.
I wish there is a list of prices for the diagnosis fee because the dealer charges different every time.
I am hoping someone would be able to guide me on how to file a complaint, I think they are way too overpriced. I want to express my word and feeling.
