Tinting only rear glass?

Hot weather approaches. I live in PA where the law pretty much states you can't tint your vehicle unless you drive an SUV... pretty dumb.

Anyone ever just tint the rear glass? It's gonna darken up the interior from the front view also and only cost me $50.

What you think? 35% - 50% film in just the back gonna stand out?

Tint laws are not only different in every state, they are just an excuse to be able to stop someone. In the 1990's my state said 20% rear and 35% front tint was legal. The current law for my state is 35% rear and 50% front and any factory tint is legal.

However there is no good way to remain legal and be able to tint your front windows in my state, as the factory glass(including windshield) is 70% already so 50% would make it too dark.

Because of this I opted for 35% 3M color stable all around, If I'm not going to be legal and risk a fine anyway, why not get what I like? Since my sonic is a hatchback I believe the car looks like a small SUV and nobody will ever question the rear tint no matter how dark I would have made it.

I should add if you get 50% tint, the cops will likely leave you alone since you can see right through it.

My 35% looking through the back window though the non-tinted windshield looks almost un-tinted. However looking from the side if there is not a light source or light background behind the car it looks very dark.

I'm new to tinting and have noob questions. For example, if someone on the internetz suggests 35% tint. Does that mean apply 35% film directly or apply 50% film to "end up with" 35% overall?

i.e. (.7 x .5 = .35) 70% stock tint with 50% film would net 35% tint overall
(.7 x .35 =.245 70% stock tint with 35% film would net 25% overall

25% tint and wayyy too dark for PA police. If I decided to do the sides too and 50% tint is the magic number (hypothetically) then I should be applying 70% film?? Eh?

The film % is the amount of light allowed to pass through.

Eg: 5% = almost no light (limo tint), 35% lets more light (Colorado's max legal limit for front windows), 50-70% is a common level for oem rear windows but they rarely ever tint the fronts.

I went 35% all around (any darker makes it hard to see at night and it's illegal here) and they did 65% to match the rear to the front (front tint of 35% - factory tint of 50% = 15% + factory 50% = 65% tint on rear to match front)

It is a good thing to google your state's tint laws. Ohio only allows 50% front windows and anything for rear windows. My front windshield is tinted but it is illegal. You can tint your windows illegally but you risk the police pulling you over and giving you tickets. On my old ford explorer I had dark 12% tinted on all windows. 12% tint means 88% of light does not come through. I got ticked, had to go to court, pay huge fines, pay to remove the tint, and had a misdemeanor on my record lol. I love dark tint but I hate getting pulled over. My sonic is mostly legal tint
