I posted this on the 1.4 engine thread, but I see now I somehow missed this technical thread. Copied and edited with updated info for a new thread here...
Besides reading about engine mounts, I’ve discovered that the mount piece that my torque strut mounts into has what appears to be a bad bushing. (This might be a false assumption as it looks like it’s a bushing with a metal ring in the middle that might also be oval?) I’ve been able to find the part on a blow out diagram of engine mounts, but not when searching for that part to purchase, except through gm parts, and am not able to determine if it’s actually round or oval...
I’ve recently replaced outer tie rod ends, lower control arms, and sway bar links and eliminated all the terrible ball joint sounds and wobbles. (Edit for this part: started getting noises back this weekend. Assuming it’s inner tie rods since those weren’t replaced. Or, on another thought, driver cv axle might have gone bad- I’ve already previously replaced passenger side)
What I still have is a terrible side-to-side wobble (felt through the entire car and not really on the steering wheel- which had been extremely exasperated with the bad parts I replaced)
If I step on it (which in this little turbo is quite fun) I don’t get that wobble. The slower the acceleration the worse the wobble is. Only under load. Take foot off the gas, smooth as silk.
Visually the upper engine mount doesn’t appear to be damaged, (although I admit I can’t really tell anything other than it is intact, no visible rips or missing rubber, and I have not removed it from the vehicle) However, noting that the wobble is side to side, I’m thinking it’s possible that a side mount would be bad as well;
Has anyone replaced this trans mount &/or torque strut? Would the top engine mount be the culprit of a side to side wobble or is it more likely to be the trans strut?
Comments/suggestions/info appreciated.
Thanks!
