What turbo sounds like

This car is my first turbo. Stock, it's so quiet I couldn't hear it operate, even though the engine was also quiet as a churchmouse. Putting in a new intake tube and chopping the bottom out of the SAB, I was able to hear it, with a ZZP intake in instead it's very audible, although still quiet enough to ignore, particularly with the radio on. I like having the noise there to cue me in to what's happening, just as I still tend to shift as much by sound as by tach or speedometer.

Not the point of this post though. What is, is what that sound is reminding me of. Took a couple weeks of hearing it, wondering if it was like a high tech toilet or some sort of dental machinery or a hydraulic lift gate, none of which were even close, but I couldn't peg it.

Espresso machine.

Or some sort of coffee house thing anyway. Think that's it? Have another idea, or maybe even a better one?

I'm going to try building this as a poll, and adding suggestions as they come in. Don't vote till we have some options up.

I think it sounds like a turbo... IMO with a trifecta tune, intake, and forge BOV it sounds great. Comparable to my friends wrx with bigger turbo, bigger injectors, Sti top mount intercooler etc, which makes 300 awhp. PSHTSEW!

Mine is not turbo, but not new to them. Many dsms in my life. Yes the sound is fun and all. But it does get old after a bit, and you try not make sound that loud after a while. Weirdest thing I've been told a turbo sounds like, was a dragon lol. On a 97 eclipse gsx mild build of 300awhp.

It sounds like a turbo is tautologically true, but not useful for describing it to people who are new to turbocharging, and who can't tell if they can hear it working on their stock 1.4. I'm pretty sure I didn't hear it at all, now that I know what it does sound like, I could probably detect it on a stocker.

You WILL hear it. It sounds like an normal exhaust speaking into a fan. Like we did as kids to sound like Darth Vader.

Lol, sounds like a Darth Vader version of a N/A 1.4.

I use the sound to tell me when to stop backing up my driveway as to not back into my garage door.

Once the turbine sound gets audible it's time to stop.

Mine always has the turbine sound. I can be going forty and floor it in sixth and hear it.

And I know my description was not helpful, so I attached a video of the loudest turbo sound I could find in short time.

Oh yeah topic!? I think it sounds like a jet engine spooling up.. although I suppose that's just an axial turbo with the combustion chambers inside of it. But yeah jet engine!!

If you think it sounds like an espresso machine then you are probably using a steam machine and those suck. You want a pump machine. They make much nicer espresso. You won't hear anything over the sound of the pump.

Okay catted the turbo sounds like a quiet air machine. Take the cats off or delete the exhaust restrictions and you have one amazingly loud even quicker spooling whistle machine. My subaru i loved to spool by walls. Oh and yes catless is illegal just so any newbies know. A tune that also deletes p0420 and p0421 fixes the catless issue.

I would say it either reminds me of alternator whine due to a blown diode OR a jet engine.
