ZZP intake + CAI Airbox

Just finished a sealed airbox to go with my ZZP intake. I've always been a fan of haveing a sealed aribox around the filter to 1. reduce intake temps and 2. the ability to generate positive pressure in the airbox (Ram air), which i accomplished with a Danny 5 style CAI thru the foglight.


Total cost was about $50 for some Sheet aluminum, rivits and vacuum line for the lid seals.

Temps going down the highway are ambient according to my UG (ambient reading vs intake temp) or 6 degree higher than my radio displayed temp which i've come to suspect is not accurate. Sitting at a stop there is some heat soak but it quickly drops once moveing.

Interestingly but not too suprising is that the ambient temp is subject to heat soak if sitting for while with a hot engine. Takes longer to fluctuate than intake temp but something worth mentioning. Also of note is Intake temps will slowly climb with the throttle fully released, temps quickly drop once the throttles opened back up.

looks like you put your intake into a hot box. your intake temps should be ambient at highway cruising speeds.

Nope, the ZZP filter is substanially bigger and different in shape. All the dimensions were from scratch. Started with Beer boxes for templates and then transcriped it to steel.

Nice Job, always great to see some DIY mods.

A couple suggestions - If you have a manometer, check the pressure in the box. When doing air boxes, you have to be careful to either have a really good pressurized source of cold air to supply the box, or have enough air gaps in the box.

If the air source you are using is too small, then when you go full throttle, the air will stay cold, but the air box will go into a slight vacuum, decreasing the amount of air getting into the engine.

If the you have some good air gaps, the box will not go into a vacuum and the power will remain.

Also, if the box is in a high pressure area, some holes in the intake can be very beneficial. One of the intakes we produce for another car, builds a lot of pressure in the box, close to 1" of water pressure, and that intake performed very well, although the temps would always be 5-8 degrees above ambient. After doing some testing, we found that the air was circulating inside of the box, picking up heat before it was ingested by the engine. By placing a single 1/2" hole in the right spot, the air temp dropped to ambient all of the time, FYI. You can pick up some Manometers on Ebay for pretty cheap and they really help when doing testing and development on something like this to make sure you are really helping.

Last time at the track I was waiting in line with a 12second SRT, and guess what? Modified SAB.

Esymr2- There is less "whoosh" sound with the airbox, i'd say it sounds pretty close to the stock airbox. I've got a loud exhaust so I couldn't hardly hear any intake noise before.

Pre- You know how much I adore the SAB! This is my tribute too it.

Oh I also forgot to mention that another reason for this mod was to relocate a particularly obtrusive sensor into a more remote place.. I can't get too specific yet but I'll leave a teaser! It wouldn't be possible without ECP

I do have plans for a version 2 as I've discovered a few areas that could use improvement. I like your idea, it'd be really cool and definetely unique.

But I'll be switching to good ole steel since its cheap and easy to bend & weld.
