After the tragedy of my cousins passing I felt like I needed to do something for his family because I wasn't able to be there for them at the funeral. Kris was the biggest Detroit Tigers fan I ever known and we went to every game with our Grandpa back at the old Tiger Stadium growing up so I decided to write to the Detroit Tigers to see if they would do something as an acknowledgment of his families loss.
I started out by writing in on the Detroit Tiger's Facebook page sending a nice message with some pics of my cousin at games and in his Tiger's gear and asked them if they could put something on their FB page or write a comment on my cousins memorial page, or what ever they felt was appropriate. The same day when I got home from work I also wrote a similar letter into the Tigers.com Homepage thinking it might not hurt. To my shock it took 3 days for a response from their FB page and only after I wrote in again to tell them of my disappointment that I didn't even get a reply to my request. The person who wrote back to me didn't even read my message as they told me sorry for my father passing, which was my cousin, and they cannot do it because if they did it for one they have it do it for all. What a let down, but looking back now I chalk it up to just an IT guy tired of reading FB messages all day and not having any real affiliation with the team.
So 2 days go by and I am kind of disheartened by the reply I received on this and I begin to look for others way to do something special for my cousins parents. Then I have a reply from my message into the Tigers.com Homepage pop up and I begin to read the following:
Dear Matt:
On behalf of the Detroit Tigers, please accept our deepest sympathy on the great loss of your dear cousin, Kristopher. Your family must be grief-stricken by his passing.
We would like to send a letter of condolence to the family - signed by our very own Willie Horton - but in order to do so, I would need the address and the name of the person to receive the letter.
If this is something you feel would help the family in their hour of need, please advise me and I will be glad to create the letter and send to Kristopher's family with our most sincere sorrow.
Audrey Zielinski
Detroit Tigers, Inc.
This has reaffirmed to me that there are still are good people out there willing to go the extra mile for others and I know it will mean the world to Kris's family to have a letter of condolence from his favorite team and the city that he loved so much. The kicker in this whole thing is that the letter will be signed and have a little message from Willie Horton (
Willie Horton (baseball) ) who was also my Grandfather's favorite player too so it will have a very nice double meaning for everyone.
All I can say is thanks to the Detroit Tigers for being a stand up organization and making things come true for your fans who have always supported them. I know something like this might not mean much to most but I know it will give them a little bit of closure and a memory to hang on their wall of their son.
