Remote Trunk Release for Hatchback

What would be the purpose or need for it? Not trying to be a smart ass, just don't understand the need.

I think it's a good idea. Say you're carrying something heavy out to the car. You could open the hatch from the house so you don't have to put the thing back down before you put it in. Of course, you would need something to open the hatch to about halfway before the struts can take over. Don't know that it would be worth the trouble to me, but I'd sure like to see it if someone else worked it out.
Since the release is electric, creating a remote release would be the easy part. A remote opener is another animal all together. It essentially will require adding a linear actuator that can lift the hatch, creating the wiring needed to power it. (They dray a lot of current.), and then dealing with the remote part. There are several aftermarket alarms that can roll down windows, open doors, etc., so that part wouldn't be too difficult. I personally think squeezing a linear actuator in there will be the most difficult part.

Ah now I see what you are looking to do. It seems as if the actuator would replace a hydraulic strut. Since our remotes do not have a button for hatch, I'm thinking that is the problem part. I am guessing the software for the sedan has trunk unlatch. Wonder if that could fire a relay to run the actuator. Seems like a lot of work, but everyone has one of those features they miss. Like my built in garage door opener

What I never really understood was that the sedan has a button on the key fob to activate the trunk release latch; the hatchback does not: They both have the external button above the license plate to actuate the latch mechanism.
Why don't they have the same functions on the key fob? Both should have the same functions, as both have release actuators to unlatch their respective trunk/hatch openings.

Does seem odd! Wonder if a sedan key fob could be programmed for the hatch?
