Official: What are your real world MPG Numbers

I thought you guys might be interested to know I just hit my best tank yet.... 43.7 (calculated by hand). Whats more interesting??? I did this in Bay Area bumper-to-bumper rush hour traffic. Thats really not even trying, just coasting when I feel like it. So I don't doubt someone with skills seeing 50's at all. I think this tank will be even better as I'm trying to get the hang of "pulse and glide". One thing I've learned is to stay out of 6th unless you're over 60.

Too bad my 23-5mpg fillups into 50mph wind are killing my fuelly avg :\

Sorry to your wife . please ask her how this is possible I sure we all will love hearing how we all can get 51 mpg in the real world . I for one commute every day is very exited to know this info .

If you note, there is a LOT of downhill coming home, as well as some climbing. She climbs this route every morning, and decends every afternoon. On the way home, she averages 50mpg. On the way to work, 35. Combined its 41. Our total average fuel economy at 2200 miles is 39mpg.

Now, this has a lot to do with I cannot duplicate her driving style. If I drove this route, I would probably be lucky to average 35mpg going both ways. Driving style has a lot to do with fuel economy. Hell, she could get 40mpg out of our 2006 xB, and that car is only rated to 35.

After her gasup in Costco, she drove 10 miles in rush hour traffic and averaged 67mpg. Whether you believe it or not, its still pretty amazing that its possible.

My sonic has been getting right about 27.2 mpg and I travel mostly highway to and from work. It's still pretty new with only 400 miles on it so I'm hoping its just a breaking it in thing and it will start to show better mpg numbers.

Today I drove in bumper-to-bumper from Hollister CA -> Fremont CA (62 miles one way) on US101 and then I880. My trip was 124 when I got back and avg speed 52.x MPH. DIC says 46.2 which seems not bad to me!

She tends to coast a lot in gear. She tries to avoid the brakes as much as possible.

I tend to tailgate more than she does

1.8l auto getting about 30-32mpg city & 32-37mpg highway calculated over 6 fill-ups, but thats also taking it easy. 2 weeks ago I was stressed out & drivin like a crazy person & my mpg went to 22-25 avg mpg from dash readout. Its all on how u drive

I just bought a 1.4 L with 6sp. Took her to tennessee for the weekend. Going to Tennessee I averaged around 35 mpg, coming back we averaged 43 mpg. Did a lot of coasting. But around the town I haven't seen it go below 34 mpg yet.

Try this method if you're in city / rush hour traffic... but not stopped. I got it to the speed the traffic was flowing at in Cali and "wiggled" the peddle to kinda pulse/glide. The mpg really started to go off the charts as I got good at it.

Is that where you have let the gas off enough that the injectors are shutting off fuel during the deceleration?

Just to say thanx for all the great info I'm now up to 38.6 avg . up from 31.9 .1.8 6 speed AT 26miles 1 way 52 round trip every night 3am . ( That late at night I own the road and can experiment all I want )

400 miles average combined is 30.1 according to DIC , but my tank average is 29.5. Having fun, mostly city on my first (current) tank. Had 200 miles on it when I got it cause it was an out of towner.

I believe that the dash MPG readout is pretty accurate. On my Subaru, the MPG readout was also an avg. not an instant type and it would jump up quickly. Yesterday on my 115 mile drive home, the readout in my Sonic made me fight for every last mpg and climbed slowly all the way until I pulled in my driveway. I'm interested to see what happens now that I am home and will be city driving only for the next few weeks.

I am also hoping that MPG improves with break-in.

Good MPG

I have the 1.8 L 5 speed manual. I drive 25 miles to work one way. It is a combination of city (40%)and highway (60%). On my first fill up I averaged 38.3 mpg. I did baby it. On my second fill up I averaged 34.4mpg. I drove normal the second time.

I watched a video on cleanmpg.com and they said they got 65mpg on the
1.4 L turbo. I will play with mine some more and push for 50mpg.

One more thing. Check your MPG manually. Reset your trip odometer at your fill up. Then on your next fill up divide miles driven by gallons put in. You can check the accuracy of the cars calculation that way.

So far I am loving this car.
