2012 Sedan Trunk Lid Rust

Hey everyone!

My 27 month old sonic is rusting!

I took my car in today (and 9 other times since April 22nd) for suspension clunks and I noticed rust on the rear deck lid. I just came off of warranty (62,000km) and my dealership wouldn't even consider doing the rust repair for me under warranty. Apparently the bumper to bumper GM Protection Plan doesn't even cover this either.

They quoted the work at the $280-385 range so I declined.
I'm going to try and sand down the rust with some fine sandpaper and then use the touch up paint to paint over top.

Does anyone have any other suggestions in terms of removing/covering up this rust?

Also check your trunk alignment, there are these rubber screws that are adjustable and prevent the trunk from rubbing the bumper. I was unaware of this and my trunk has been contacting the bumper for who knows how long.

I'll post pictures in an hour or so.

As you can see, the rust and rubbing is symmetrical on both sides, and the rust occurs at the location where the trunk, tail light, and bumper all intersect one another.

If your trunk gap hadn't been adjusted that does not surprise me one bit. When I first got my Sonic I could actually hear the trunk striking the taillight assembly, it looks like that is what yours was doing bad enough to chip the paint off.

I adjusted the gap like you're saying, also made a DIY post you may want to check out.

I didn't know about trying to adjust the tail light, and I wish I saw your post earlier about this. My service advisor informed me about the rubber bumpers last week when she initially saw this. Mine were pretty much as short as possible, now I have them set to be a bit longer than yours and I believe the rubbing is gone.

Also I believe there are similar rubber stoppers underneath the hood as well.

Great post on adjustments.. I just got my 2012 and notice some rubbing on the very corners..nothing too bad yet .I covered it with touchup. Looking at the bumper and trunk lid closed I could see no contact. I'm going to measure the rubber stoppers and move the lights out anyway. I'm guessing the dealer adjusted it as some point after it was rubbing?
