Love the car and don't regret getting it but man, this **** has to stop..

94000km's intake pcv.. okay known issue parts in the mail (cruise forums) .. turbo pcv line was brittle, replaced that, rad hose, coolant bottle, yea okay also known issue, rear fender rusting out (maybe still covered) rear hatch paint chipping off now.. Fuel economy sucks and is very close to the same as my Grand Caravan that's 3 times the size and motor... now get word from transmission shop after finding a transmission leak, and the neutral idle feature lurching the car when stopped, then irratic shifting... the transmission needs a rebuild, like what is it with Garbage GM quality , only got under 60k miles and is worst then my old 95 neon argh...

sorry venting but this isn't right not for a 2012 … but atleast I have a warranty to cover the transmission.... argh.

well its not even factory warranty.. its past that in terms of the 5 year.... its a Lubrico warranty I got when I purchased it in December.. paid a lot for it.. but even the shop said no problems its covered we take care of you in that perspective ..


for reference strictly in town I pull average right now with ac etc on close to 25 US Mpg intown with that van and highway pulling close to 35 US MPG ..
Caravan is 2 years newer ..

same with car I get average 25 MPG strictly intown BUT the last time out on highway I did get around 40mpg then that's when it started acing up... argh haha


(based on fuel filled/distance travelled not the dash)

I had Lubrico on my last sonic and it was a waste of money, they wouldn’t cover anything that went wrong

converter is burnt , clutch plates 1 to 4 are toast, and something else they had issues with , but all in all i gotta pay for fluid and filter as stated in the warranty documents, haha , never noticed till now :( but shop is going to do it all as he explained and why to lubrico and its been approved .. needless to say the cost of the warranty has already paid for itself, Worst part is the shop has 2 other chevy's there now aswell with the same 6 speed auto with similar problems.. one has 105k km's other has 120k km's .. i see a trend here LOL

I'll never buy another warranty. When they sold me the car in 2013 they said things like "oh yea it's 100k miles warranty bumper to bumper"....they were very adamant about the bumper to bumper until I needed to use it. Every single dealership I went to chuckled when I said bumper to bumper and said "there's no such thing".

Long story short, never buy an extended warranty. The cost of the warranty could repair your car ten times over (reliably) compared to the stealership.

Small Update

seems no one knows what @#$&$% Transmission this car has, it was pretty much first production month of the auto/turbo combo as originally the turbo was only a Manual apparently , well after 5 different kits for the sonic, not one rebuild kit from the transmission shop parts supplier, is the right one, now the funny part, GM themselves have no idea which kit it needs, and ordered 3 different kits hoping one might be the right one..(verified this myself)


like really GM dosent even knowwhats in this , how the hell are we suppost to fix this ..

past 2 weeks now... no second vehicle this is killing me getting up at 5am to bring wife to work argh :(

Moral of the story. . 2012 was the first year for the SONIC.
I never buy a "First" model year of any vehicle and not *used* especially. Guess why. No one knows how a used 2012 may have been abused nor how or *if* it was properly maintained. Can't blame GM for that.
And, yes, since 2012 the transmissions have changed and upgraded.
Daughter has a 2014 with none of those problems and approaching 100,000 Miles. And she drives it fairly hard. Transmission fluid was changed at 72,000 miles. Is working fine. These are very small transmissions. Fluid should be changed about every 40K miles in my opinion.
Only parts she has replaced is the T-stat housing at 75K miles and was free under the special extended warranty coverage.
And for MPG . . . heck, I even have a lifetime average of 31.3MPG in mixed city/highway for my 2017 1.8L non turbo.

well it was plagued with the neutral idle feature issue.. lurching at idle in gear, and occasionally wouldn't reengage unless I put it in manual mode.. that IS a GM problem with defective fiber plates, that should have been a recall, rather then a TSB .. as that is a safety issue when in traffic and can't move..

the fact he Dealer has no clue what parts are for the transmission is in the car.. again a GM issue, GM should know whats in it from the build sheet.. and or the friggen VIN #
or the tag off the transmission.. argh..

this is why when I buy used I buy warranty, $h!t happens... but when no one knows what parts are for this car... LOL , I have already reached out to my cousin(close family) about this to see wtf is going on, he is one of the people in charge of robotics for gm , so he probably might find out more on this then customer service can.. im not mad that its taking time to fix, just pissed GM doesn't have a clue, last part needed is a simple internal drum that got scored... in the end 8 have been ordered (parts supplier and gm combined) and so far 5 that are for this transmission are NOT the correct parts.. 1 today 1 tomorrow and 1 Friday.. hers is hoping today's is the right one..

I have bought first year production vehicles before and never had a single issue....

car has under 59k miles/94000 km's was owned by an older lady..

yea... exactly ..lol im assuming the first month of production for the auto on the turbo would be gen 1 … but yea..lol

a lot of the parts are interchangeable, between these transmissions apparently its just the damn drums … kinda funny no less but still a piss off im awake 18 hours+ aday till we get it back.. try to get a kid back to sleep in the morning lol!!!

550 4-5-6 clutch drum .. that's the drum having issues getting the right one but based on that sheet these transmission are from 08 and up... so its not like a first year build of the transmission ..
