Accepted Oil

I was looking at Walmart today at the different types of oil. I know that many here use Mobil 1 (including myself) and Royal Purple. However, I noticed that Valvoline, Pennzoil, and Castrol make full synthetic oils which are a few bucks cheaper than Mobil 1. I did not see Dexos anywhere on the packaging of these.

Are these oils acceptable for use in the Sonic? Not that I'll change, but just wondering.

What other oils have you used in the Sonic?

I know a few people who just run a full syn and have had no issues. But this would void your power train warranty.

Mobile 1 is full synthetic and doesn't void your warranty. It's offered as an option when the dealer services your car as well as standard in their higher end cars. As attrapereves stated, "Dexos" is the standard and is required. Most other oil companies without the Dexos stamp of approval are up to par they just wont pay royalties for the Dexos mark.

Looks like they've added some more oils to the approved list recently. It now even includes some flavors of Valvoline. They used to be in the "we have oils that meet or exceed the specs but aren't paying the fee" crowd.

IMHO, dexos1 oils are readily available and while a quality non-licensed oil will probably work just fine, I'd rather not have to worry about warranty.

I run Pennzoil Platinum full synthetic in mine. It's approved, I've been able to buy it for the price of store brand dino or less, and the car likes it.

How much are you paying for the Pennzoil? I believe I paid about $24-25 for a 5qt jug of Mobil 1 at Walmart. The other brands I mentioned were about $2-3 cheaper.

If it's only 2-3 dollars less for other brands I would personally stick with Mobile 1.

I use Mobil 1 extended full synthetic. Dexos approved. 28.00 for a 5 quart jug.
