I have the 6 months of onstar.
I have a bluetooth phone paired for music and handsfree.

How in the heck do I get my handsfree calling to use my cell phone instead of always trying to use the onstar??

If you paired it correctly, it should just work. Try pairing it again, not as a media device though, as a phone

So if it is paired correctly, it should automatically preferentially call using my phone instead of onstar?

yes. push the button on your steering wheel and you're good to go, assuming its paired correctly. Somewhere in the Bluetooth menu you can pair phone.

Also make sure that the Bluetooth setting is enabled on your phone, and shows your vehicle is listed as a paired device. Sometimes it gets turned off while managing apps and power consumption settings.
