Have a problem with the handbrake?
Horror Story here...
So, I came home today from work parked my sonic in the garage put the hand brake on. Shut the garage go up into my condo to grab my books for school about ten minutes later come back down try to open my garage and it wouldn't budge... I keep trying with the outside garage door opener then finally it opens a fourth of the way... I stick my head down to look whats going on and my car rolled back into the garage door. I then crawled under the garage door to pull the car forward... needless to say it was too late I have a scratch and DEEP... I just got this car a little over a week ago with 863 miles on it... I am supper ticked... This isn't the first time I have had my handbrake release... I usually leave my car in gear but since I was just running in and out plus my garage isn't even on a slope... Anyways just seeing if anyone else has had a problem I am going to take it into the dealer and see what they say... The thing is I tried to get the brake to do it again on hills and I haven't been able too. Without being able to show the dealership I highly doubt they are going to help me out on this. Lesson learned never trust the handbrake. I learned this on my cobalt as it never worked right from day one!!!

you leave a standard in neautral when you park? I think everyone elso leaves it in first or second gear. I never use my parking brake...

Always park in gear. this is a good example of why. the brake should not have failed but it does happen. sorry bout the damage. i would be pretty hot too.

Yeah I normally leave it in gear on any sort of incline, but my garage isnt on an incline... Well lesson learned just super ticked...

That sucks about the car rolling back into the door.

You should always use the parking brake. Other wise the car is just resting on a gear. Ever notice it being a little harder to shift from park when you dont use the parking brake. I couldnt remember the correct terminology, but Wikipedia states it puts undue stress on the parking pin, and that using a parking can increase the life of this pin.

I know the aforementioned cars are standard trans., but it couldnt possibly be good for a standard trans either. They put parking brakes for a reason. Come to complete stop, yank parking brake, then put into gear or park.

My driveway is on an incline and never had this problem, but I leave it in 2nd and handbrake on.

FYI parking parkes are not installed for parking they are required by law to be installed and a back up for the hydraulic braking system. you know E-Brake...

It will never hurt your tranny .... more stress is put on your gears just driving not mention shifting.

I always use my e brake when parking on inclines or declines. Takes the pressure off the transmission and leaves it on the brakes. I have not seen if it effects newer cars as much as older (90's).
