Auto with manual mode question

Are you supposed to let your foot of the gas when shifting like a regular manual? Or does it not matter?

Also what will get me better pick up, manual mode or auto? I don't know if the computer can do it better than me. I don't have any real expereince w/ manual, however getting manual was not an option in my personal life depending on who made need to drive or just move the car.

I am driving an LTZ turbo 2013!

you will have a lot of fun with the sport manual shift. you can let off the gas pedal if you want but its not mandatory. for me i tend to lose a couple mpg with the sport shift cause its a lot of fun, but a good things is that the computer learns how you shift and tries to apply that to the auto.

^^^ditto^^^ since the trans is a conventional automatic with a torque converter you do not have to let off the gas.

When in auto mode the computer tells the transmission when to shift via electronic solonoids that change which gear your in based on many factors

In manual mode you basically tell the computer when to shift the trans and it carries out the shifting the same way it would normally only this time its at your command.

I can't comment on what's best for economy as I have the manual but some disciplined members have reported good results in manual mode by shifting as soon as possible. (The computer has limits where it won't let u shift to prevent damage such as over revving on a downshift or lugging the engine)

I dont know but i have heard that you should not put the tranny in neutral and coast(hypermill) and put it back in to drive until you come to a stop.Is this true? 6speed auto with manual mode.Can you manual mode up to speed than put in neutral and coast til you need to speed up and then put it back into drive at speed? or is this to hard on the tranny? 7th gear hillbilly high.better mpg?

No that's basically for Manual trans so they don't hold pressure on clutch system but for autos you'll just wear the shift solenoid like crazy

It really does, it is an absolute blast to use and because i've used it, the car feels much more responsive than when I test drove it brand new of course the falken tires helps that too. the stock tires hold you back of course thats because this is an eco car.

I have found myself using the manual mode more often than not. My sonic doesn't seem to like to shift out of 4th gear. One hill that I travel daily, consistantly the sonic will remain in 4th gear after cresting the hill and backing off the power... There have been times when I'm merging on the highway where it just won't shift to 5th... pushing 4500 RPM's and I'm backing off the power...

So because of this, i tend to use the manual mode and have seen a 1-2 MPG bump. I think the manual mode will get you better MPG if you don't drive it like you stole it

Exactly. I drive in manual mode primarily to get better fuel economy.

Previous statements claiming you cannot get better MPG using manual mode are false due to the nature of their driving.

Agreed. When i drive economically i stay manual and when i wana drive like i stole ot i use auto as I'm sure vince tined it better then i can manually do

The manual says manual mode is for sport driving, I believe also it revs higher in manual mode. The lower the rpms the higher mpg you can achieve, I have yet to see any advantage of driving manual mode to achieve higher mpg besides if I wanna drive like a granny i'll just keep it in auto.

Conditionally lower rpm's can yield better gas mileage. It is not always true. When your car is under more load like driving up a hill or carrying some additional weight, your fuel efficiency will be optimized by riding a lower gear inside the engine's power range. It is dynamic and even headwinds can affect it. For instance, if you're riding too high of a gear and the engine can barely put out 40 ft-lb torque and would optimally require 45 ft-lb torque to maintain speed, you're lugging the engine. The engine will be consuming more fuel to try and make the required torque to maintain speed at the lower, out of power range, rpm. Downshifting and keeping the engine in range to make the best effective power is more efficient.

From my observations, the 1.4t has a low rpm power range that seems to drop off around 1200 rpm. It becomes more effective to ride up a hill at 1500 rpm as opposed to lugging up it at 1100. The same applies to flat stretches because of aerodynamics.

All I know is I see better mpg in auto than manual mode, the manual also states that the automatic is tuned for mpg. So you're not going to convince me to use manual mode all the time. The manual also states that the automatic is set up for better mpg so i'll stick with what the manual says.

I'm not trying to convince you that manual mode is better for gas mileage. Automatic mode with cruise control engaged is extremely efficient. It knows when to downshift to compensate for increased load etc. My statements apply to when actually using manual mode and there is increased load.
