Budget>Full>E-85

Alright, so.. I am getting a tune. I cannot afford the clutch for the E-85 tune.. YET.. and my question is relating to the costs.

Budget tune: $200
Full tune: $315
E-85: $775 for all

+Buying the cable for gas tunes is $350/$475 respectively.

Now, my question is, if I have a cable already and I AM a Trifecta tune customer, E-85 costs $480. But, if I upgrade from a full tune to E-85 it costs a total of $945 which is $170 more than going straight to E-85.

Am I correct in stating that I am better off going straight to E-85 than stairstepping up? Also, would I be able to go from budget to E-85 and save $30?

You do not have to have a new clutch for an E85 tune. The standard E85 tune, known as "blue pill" limits your engine to what Vince thinks the limit the stock clutch can handle is.

If you later upgrade your clutch, I believe you can upgrade to the "red pill" at no additional cost. The difference between "blue pill" and "red pill" is that the latter gives you all the power your engine can produce, instead of limiting you. Be sure to check on that, of course, I don't work for either of these companies.

I'll also note that I've been running "red pill" on a stock clutch for about 6 months now with no sign of trouble, while I blew out two aftermarket clutches in just a couple months each. So perhaps the fear of the stock clutch is over-blown.

Finally, I know you have a manual, but for anyone else looking at this issue, if you have an automatic Vince will give you "red pill" E85 tune without complaint.

Thank you for the response. I am aware of the blue pill.. but after a couple private messages and things I have read, I've learned it isn't as refined as the red pill, meaning worse gas mileage, plus some issues, and I don't feel like dealing with it, and waiting until I can get the aftermarket clutch so I can go straight to red pill.. unless an E-85 user such as yourself thinks its a good idea? Also.. I would risk the stock clutch, honestly, but if it DOES go out and I can't afford it.. big problem lol

I had both red and blue pills on my tune, as "select-a-tune", and I don't think there's anything wrong with the blue pill, it was just less power across the board... but more power than burning gasoline. Blue Pill was set up to be on when Cruise Control was on, so I still used it quite a lot on longer trips.

I think if you're planning on going E85, and you're putting the alcohol sensor in, that you might as well go straight to the "blue pill" tune, and start saving your pennies for an aftermarket clutch. I hear they have fixed the problems the early clutch was having, or you could just get a 2014 OEM clutch, which is also rated for more power than the 2012-2013 one.

If on the other hand, you are worried about gas mileage... I have some bad news about E85. It's cheaper per gallon, but significantly worse mpg, which means depending on your pump price differential (which varies wildly) you'll probably spend more $ per mile than you would sticking to gasoline.

If what you want is more power, or if you consider ethanol to be more "green" than gasoline, E85 is a great fuel. But it probably isn't going to save you any money.

Thank you again for the response! Very helpful! I was aware of the gas mileage drop, but what I hear was you would get somewhere around 4-6 mpg less with blue than red, which was what I was concerned with. Glad you cleared that up : )

The last question I still have is if the costs were right in my original post, also if " I am already a Trifecta customer and just need the E85 update [+$-145.00]" counts for budget.

I'm almost positive it would be more $$$ to go from the budget to the E-85 tune.

Also as Swordsmith stated I'm pretty sure once you get the E-85 tune you get both "pills", which one you get is just a matter of which one you request and when/if you upgrade the clutch on the manual trans.

But BNR has a deal where you buy the larger injectors and get the retune fee for $300
That's -Genuine Bosch 42# injectors for $260 and -Retune for $40

Normally you can't get knockoff injectors for that price and then would have to pay the $100 retune fee.
