...it would be far easier and possibly cheaper to just buy an Encore and drive that instead...but with enough money anything is possible.
They may share the same platform, but that doesn't mean their unibodies are 100% compatible. The Sonic just wasn't given provisions to drive the rear wheels. A tunnel would have to be made for the driveshaft and the rear suspension would have to be completely replaced/redesigned.

Given everything thats tied into todays cars' AWD systems - EXTREMTLY doubtful - but a cool idea nonetheless...

Given the way most FWD converted to AWD systems seem to work on GM vehicles, watse of time an money to change a Sonic for it. Unless GM took a drastic change in direction on how the old ones worked, its not like the typical AWD you see on vehicles designed for it from the beginning.

the encore probably doesn't use the rear wheels very often anyway. the new lesabres keep the rear diff disengaged until it slips (kinda like the quattros used to) I assume for fuel mileage and turning radius. unless youre on snow or something its fwd almost all the time

I had a 2009 Pontiac Vibe that was AWD and it was a big disappointment. The AWD sucked because it was one of those "slip and grip" systems (from the Toyota Rav4), plus it gave the car no power and sucked gas.
If you were to put AWD on a Sonic, you'd best design one that will work with the car instead of slapping some other existing system on. And IMHO the best AWD systems out there are Subaru and Audi Quattro because they WORK.
AND, make the engine make at least 160hp so it doesn't let you down when you need it, ie passing and merging on a freeway!
