C-pillar/rear door handle removal on hatchback

So I've tried to paint the C-pillars/door handles a couple of times. I've used duplicolor, and the paint itself is fine. The problem I am encountering time and time again is being able to prep the surface sufficiently. Thus, leading to a not-so-stellar paint job.

I would like to remove the c-pillar/door handles so that I can prep and paint them at my worktable, but am having trouble doing so. Anyone given it a shot and removed them successfully?

the pull handles or the surround for the handle.
I'd say you remove the plastic part on the inside of the door to access the backside of the surround and the handles..

Ya I'm talking about the pull handle and the surrounding plastic, both on the exterior.

I gave removing them a shot a year ago, would pop a couple of the tabs, but it always felt like something in the middle was grabbing and wouldn't budge. I have been a bit afraid to push it further out of fear of breaking something.
