Chevrolet Sonic Awarded IIHS Top Safety Pick
Chevrolet is reporting that the new for 2012 Sonic sub-compact car earned an Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) Top Safety Pick. The Sonic achieved “good” scores in all four of the IIHS tests, which include frontal offset, side, and rear impact tests as well as roof strength in a rollover test.
“Only vehicles that perform with the highest level of safety in their class earn the Institute’s top accolade,” said IIHS President Adrian Lund.
Chevy says the 2012 Sonic’s 10 airbags (which the automaker likes to point out is two more than most competitors), including driver and front passenger knee airbags, and StabiliTrak electronic stability control contributed to it earning a Top Safety Pick designation. Sixty percent of the Sonic’s safety cage is high-strength steel and features a single welded side ring unit in the body structure.
“We developed Sonic to exceed our customer’s expectations of the subcompact market, both in the fun-to-drive performance characteristics and the segment-leading safety features,” said Joaquin Nuño-Whelan, Sonic vehicle line director and vehicle chief engineer, in a press release. “This designation by IIHS confirms that Chevy customers can buy a subcompact with top safety performance.”
Chevrolet is also touting other Sonic safety features such as power front disc and rear drum brakes with brake assist, a LATCH system, and six months of OnStar service. The Sonic also comes with hill-hold technology –to assist manual transmission equipped cars when starting on a hill.
The Sonic joins Chevrolet’s Volt and Cruze small cars as well as Ford’s Fiesta and Focus models, the Honda Civic, Hyundai Elantra, and Mazda3 which earned 2011 IIHS Top Safety Pick awards.
