Difficult Ignition

Does anyone else have trouble inserting their key into the ignition? It will catch right when I enter it, then go in completely. I feel like I have to sometimes force the key in (it's fine after the little gate/cover). I think the little gate that covers the keyhole is what's causing the problem?

that's an odd complaint. never heard that on a car this new.

It happens to me once in a while if the key does not go in perfectly straight. Not sure why, but a little wiggle and a push sorts it out. Sometimes I just wonder if it is a little dirt in the key that gets pushed out.

I had an old 300D Benz with a laser cut key. Never had this problem, but they key was a lot wider.

Mine does this, more so with my key than the wife's key. Seems sticky when trying to pull it out at times also. Not enough of a bother to worry about IMO.

Yeah, I'm not worried. I was just wondering if if anyone else has the issue. One of my Sonics seems to have it worse than the other.

I know its off topic, but why do they call the keys laser cut? There are machining marks on them so they're not cut with a laser. I also found this video.

As far as I know, they've never been cut with a laser. Some of the more luxury cars have been using them since the 1980s.

Honestly, I don't believe they are really any more secure than a regular key. My belief is that car manufacturers use them so that you HAVE to get keys from them. My old Toyota key had a chip in it that wouldn't allow the engine to start, but at least I could go to the hardware store to pick up a spare key to work the door and trunk.

Maybe brands like Chevrolet and Ford are trying to appear more luxury by using these keys, but also so that you have to spend $50+ from the dealer on a key.

Some of the Mercedes keys can cost over $200 as they only allow for 2 keys per car. If you lose them, they have to reprogram the whole system.

I miss the GM keys from the 70s and 80s. Square one for the ignition and round for the doors.

Yeah my '84 truck has those, one for the doors and one for the ign.

My '93 Toyota has two keys but only because someone changed the trunk lock at some point before I got it, so one key works that and the other does the doors and ignition. Nice thing about worn out Japanese car keys is that I can use a key from just about any other older Toyota on the car too, I've found keys in the junkyard that work in my car. Just as a spare lol.

Most 1950s and early 60s cars had keys that remind me of padlock keys or cabinet keys. One sided cuts and small.

I also noticed my "key" was difficult to plug in.
I cleaned it and applied some grease. White Lithium? Something like that. Only slightly difficult now.

I find the key a bit odd to insert sometimes. Others it slides right in. I had trumped it up to a new car I wasn't inserting the key at the right angle. So I'm glad I'm not alone ha ha. It's gotten better tho now that I've had the car a few weeks.

Mine was difficult when new but seems much easier now.

My Saturn had a worn out key that would work to at least unlock the doors for about half of Saturn's haha
