Disappearing MPG display on dash

I noticed the MPG display on the upper right corner of my Sonic's digital dash now disappears when I turn off and and re-start the car. It comes right back if I twist the selector on the left steering column stalk but In now have to bring it back up every time I start the car. Anybody run into this? Did I hit something by mistake?

Does the display say code 82 when it does that? I bet it does. If it does, your oil life is below 10% and its time for an oil change.

You'd think with today's technology you would get a pop up on the display 'change my oil, you dummy!'

And while on that MPG meter topic, why not make a MPG computer that is actually CORRECT? Mine is about 2-3 mpg over-optimistic compared to what my actual gas mileage really is.

Bingo. The screen in the right corner does say "code 82". Funny, I've changed my oil 3 times in the time it took the computer to tell me to (once at 500 for break-in and then every 3000 after that). Sadly, I can take a guess at why it say "code 82" instead of "time to change your oil". A code # is more likely to instill a degree of urgency or worry in the average customer who will take right back to the dealer. The dealer is then likely to get the business for the oil change.

There are multiple codes. 1 for the left front turn signal, another for the right front headlight etc. etc. I guess it was easier to do codes than say what the problem is. At least they listed the codes in the owners manual.

Today's cars with today's oils don't require the 3000 mile oil change. The OLM determines the mileage remaining based on driving conditions. Typically 6-8000 miles. If you want to do the oil changes at 3k go for it. It won't hurt anything.

If I'm not mistaken I believe the oil change interval on the sonic is 7-7500 miles but I change mine every tire rotation at every 3-5k
