So my buddies dad owns a shop and we've decided on a engine swap. Anyone have any ideas on what a good consideration would be. I'm considering an ls1 right now

LS1 in a Sonic? Sounds like a whole lot of work squeezing that and everything that goes with it into our cars. Almost put one in my 68 Cougar but decided against it.

i second this. much easier to fit in the engine bay, less fabrication, and would be more than capable of making awesome power.

Definitely go with this. I've got a Sky Redline with essentially the same motor, pushing 400 to the wheels with a bolt on larger wheel turbo, an EFR 6758 bolts right up. Plus getting it out of a Malibu, it's already setup as you need it (FWD) and you can take the trans with it as well, then try to make it work.

yep, dont limit it to the LTG designator in your search. its essentially the same thing as the LNF/LDK/LHU motors from the 2008-2010 cobalt ss and the buick regal gs turbo's.

Not to sound like a jerk but if you don't have a lot of money to spend an LS1 conversion is out of the question. You better look for a bolt up option. Engine swaps and tight budgets usually don't go together. LS swaps get VERY expensive.

What about a Euro motor like the Opel Astra had? Two of the 2.0 were running hot (Z20LER is 197hp, the Z20LEH is 236hp). Since they stopped production in 2010 might be able to find a used motor with some potential and I think it mounts to the M trans (family II motor)

it's not the size, it's how you drive it....

The LUV is a great engine that's already set up perfectly to fit in a Sonic. Just yank that 1.8 out and have a go. Might want to grab the ECU and the VIN while you're at it, since I don't think the stock 1.8 ECU is going to do very well.

I know this post was necro'd rather recently, but I wanted to leave this here in case the OP ever came back.

LS4 - This is the FWD v8 from GM. Aluminum block instead of cast iron, 5.3 Liter, adapted for transverse FWD applications. This 303 HP monster weighs 478 lbs, and was used in the Pontiac Grand Prix GXP, Chevrolet Impala SS, Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS, and the Buick LaCrosse Super. If buying a crate engine is too expensive, you can always try to find one in a junkyard and refurbish it on your own time.

MR6/F40 - Transverse FWD 6-speed manual transmission that should match up to the LS4 bellhousing. Aluminum cast, 124 lbs, and certified for up to 295 ft-lbs of engine torque. Used in Pontiac G6 GTP/GT, SAAB 9-3/9-5, Buick Regal/Verano, Alpha Romeo 156/159/166/Brera, Lancia Thesis.

Just some food for thought.

57hp/L? That's god awful... Between the weight of the motor and transaxle would it be worth the meager power gain? I guess the overall power potential could be but maaaaaan that's a sad hp number

Which is why you would slap dual turbos on it at a later date.

Those high-beams just beg to be turned into dual air intake ports.

I say put a VG30DETT in it. (300ZX twin turbo)

We had to postpone and I'm back to building my car again. Realistically would it be easier to do an engine swap or turbo on existing engine. Looking for about 300-380 hp under $5k
