GM’s 2012 Chevy Sonic Subcompact Hits 40 mpg Highway
General Motors Co.’s 2012 Chevrolet Sonic , will now be listed as the most fuel-efficient small cars in the market with its new fuel economy readings. The only sub-compact car currently being manufactured in America will now return an estimated 40 miles per gallon highway with a 1.4-liter engine and manual transmission.
The 2012 Chevrolet Sonic draws its power from the 1.4-liter Ecotec turbocharged engine that churns out 138 horsepower and 148 pound-feet of torque. Pinned against its rivals, chiefly the 2012 Ford Fiesta SFE and the 2012 Hyundai Accent, the car gives out a little extra horses (18 horsepower more than Ford Fiesta ) and does 60 mph in 8.2 seconds. In city driving, the Sonic returns 29 mpg city.
“Sonic changes the subcompact stereotype and puts an end to the term ‘econobox,‘” said Joaquin Nuno-Whelan, the car’s vehicle line director and chief engineer. “Our engineers wanted to bring a car with an athletic feel and an excellent ride and handling to a segment not known for excitement.” He touted the combination of these driving characteristics with the 40-mpg fuel economy rating as a winning combination for Sonic drivers.
The Sonic’s 1.8L manual on the other hand gets fuel economy of 26 mpg city and 35 mpg highway while the automatic gets 25 mpg city and 35 mpg highway.
The 2012 Chevrolet Sonic carries a starting price of $14,495 including a destination charge.
