Greetings from a 2013 Sonic RS

Hello everyone,
My name is Shawn. I live in the southern Maryland area and i have owned my Sonic RS (Summit White) since April of last year. Im actually 2 days away from my cariversary. I've fallen completely in love with it in the year that I have owned it.I bought it used with about 80000miles on it and it still had 20000miles and two years of powertrain warranty when I got it which is good because i did have to take it in due to it stalling. Apparently it was missing some sort of a check valve somewhere in the intake that was causing it to stall. Other than that hiccup I've had no problems at all with it so far. It did take a bit to get used to shifting into 2nd which I know from this forum is a Sonic thing. My long term plans for the car are to make what is already a really fun car to drive even more fun and more capable for autoX and track days while also making such a unique and aggressive looking little hatchback more unique to me because lets be honest no one should have to look out there side window and see another Sonic that looks just like theres. All I have done to it so far are a few cosmetic changes (removed the Sonic and turbo sticker from the rear, moved the RS badge to the front grill and plasti dipped the chrome around the rear taillights black) but, I hope with the help and the knowledge of this Sonic community I will be able to start really digging into this labor of love and start really making this car mine. I appologize for the long intro but, I am very excited to be here. I feel like I owe everyone some pictures for dealing with the long intro.

Thanks for the welcome! I do like the Sonics in black. Quite dusty where your at. Rally racing or just the environment your in? I see your in Texas so maybe just environment.

They should all get commissions from chevy

Though I have the poor mans RS (the LTZ) mines a 2014 but least we both have the same number of eyes on the front :blankface: those newer models are a bit too 'sneaky cat' like looking for my taste

I know where your at Maddog! Im from VA orginally. Harrisonburg VA area. If i want to hit good roads I always cross over to VA. We will have to meet up sometime and cruze! Hahahaha get it.

I went off roading in Utah with my girl. But I actually now live in Arizona so not much less dusty. Welcome to the club and never be afraid to ask any questions. A lot of these people are super helpful and willing to work with you for a solution.

I’m with ya. Not a fan of the “new look” Sonics. However, glad to see any year Sonics on the roadways at this point. They seem scarce in my neck of the woods. Coworker of mine picked up a 13’ RS Hatch. Told him it was the first original RS I’ve seen in town in 2 yrs. let alone in the same parking lot. I’ll take pics together eventually.

Shawn, I too offer my sincerest welcome. It is good to read that you are still digging your RS. Me too. Mine came new to me with 40,000 mi; it now has 124,000. Some of those mile are hard ones because they include three seasons of SCCA autocross. The durability of this car is particularly impressive. Aside from my attempts to improve this car, the only defect so far was that check valve thing you mentioned, which failed on mine at about 110,000 mi. The direct cure was a new valve cover, but while under the hood, I also replaced the intake manifold just to be sure. They both have check valves that work together. The "tumblers" (or baffles) obstructing the intake manifold disappeared under the Dremel of course, just like they had in the old manifold.

My car has lots of mods, all of which are DIY. So many in fact, that I have begun reversing some of them. The heim-jointed lower control arms ended up being too harsh for me. Not to mention bumping my car to the "Street Modified" autocross class. "Street Touring Hot Hatch" (STH) is SCCA's newest class for 2018 and my RS would be well prepared for it but for a single problem. The BNR waste gate actuator is not allowed in STH even though its only function is to allow the tune to work its magic. Tuning is unlimited in STH, and a mechanical LSD is (surprisingly) also allowed. Just not an engine accessory that actually lets the tune do its job. SCCA is governed by a lot of old men, many of whom are afflicted with chronic anal retention.

PM me or post anytime if you are curious about some of you possible mods and what to expect from them. Put such posts in the "motorsports" section of the forum (all the way at the bottom ). Now that the autocross season begins in April, I'll be checking it.
