Leaking thermostat turned out to be broken

Hey guys,
I have a 2014 1.4 Turbo sedan with 62,000 Miles on it, one day during a normal routine check I noticed the surge tank was almost bone dry, noticed I had a big leak at the thermostat.

I took it apart it turned out that a part of the mating surface had broken off. Only thing I can think of is a manufacturing defect that lead to its failure due to the heating/cooling cycle. Has any one encountered this?

I know that it's a common failure point, just curious if it failed for many in the same way (I have no reason to think otherwise)

Most of the time the thermostat assembly fails where the top hose connects. The fitting inside snaps and cracks causing leaking.

My thermostat failed due to the plastic housing melting on the inside where the thermostat itself mounts to the housing.

In fact, I had the same issue on the opposite end at the coolant neck. Melted from the inside out until it leaked.

I recently replaced mine for the second time. First time was at about 62k, and again at 175k. Both times I found a break in similar locations as the og photo. It blows mine mind, the lengths car companies will go to save a buck.
