LED headlight install

I haven't seen any posts on these types of bulbs yet so I figured I'd share my experience so far. I just finished installing a set of LED headlight bulbs. I wanted to upgrade from the crappy halogens but did not want to install HIDs in the OEM housing or have to do a projector mod. I haven't seen how they light up the road at night yet, but so far I like the look and they appear to have more light output than the stock halogen bulbs. They are pure white, 5000k, in color. The "bulb" consists of one high power CREE LED that fires upwards only into the reflector housing. This keeps the light more on the road and less in the face of other drivers. I purchased them from vleds.com

The bulbs come with an LED controller that looks similar to a small HID ballast. I was able to fit the LED controller inside the headlight housing.

Driver side is LED, passenger is stock halogen

Notice how the light doesn't shine down into the reflector's bottom half

I'm curious of light output generally with leds you get brightness but not distance. Distance is key in automotive lighting.

There is no bulb out warning. I'll take some night shots as soon as it gets dark here.

The fog light housings are from ebay: Chevrolet Sonic Aveo 2011 2013 Daytime Running Light DRL LED Day Lights | eBay
I plastidipped the chrome on them, put smoke tint film on the led light, and created a vent where the fog light is supposed to be.

How tight is the fit for the heatsink inside the housing? I have been looking at doing this upgrade myself. Since getting LED switchbacks for my turn signals, the headlights look sad by comparison.

The dust covers still screwed on but just barely. I didn't have to force it though. A different manufacturer may or may not fit

I had to wait until half time to take some night pics lol. I'd say that they're at least as bright as halogen bulbs, if not brighter, but they're not as bright as HIDs

Is this a plug and play kit or does it require some splicing or some sort of modification? I'm with you about brighter lights but I don't want to put aftermarket HIDs that will just blind ppl or retro fitting HIDs is quite expensive to get it done right. Thanks for sharing this, really interested.

This is plug and play . Quick and easy if the heatsink is small enough .

Thanks, I actually had to google heat sink because I never heard of that. Lots of info I found and learned.

Just so you know I ran LEDs on my headlights and fogs. Constantly running they get too hot and eventually all four lights had failures. I still have LEDs in my high beams but I switched back to hids until the technology is better. Don't get me wrong I miss every day without the LEDs just letting you know

I'm not sure if I have a camera that is capable of shooting a decent night video but I'll give it a shot.
