I current own own a base model 5spd, I'm thinking of upgrading to RS. Apart from the obvious upgrades (brakes, suspension, body work, etc) is it worth upgrading to a higher trim? or am I better staying with my LS?

Lack of options, no AC is the breaker. I originally wanted a RS, but could not afford so I settled on a LS. No I have some money saved for a good down payment, and a better job them last year. so a RS be financially doable.

If YIU can swing it is trade in and get what you want.
I bought an LT cruze new in 2012, traded it at 95K for a 2015 LTZ sonic which is what I wanted when I originally bought the cruze. I owed more than the cruze was worth, I just put a $4000 down payment on the sonic, since the sonic was used with 10K miles, its price was so low my payment dropped by $150 a month!!!

Maybe as a place to start, look at the cost of an RS vs the trade in price for your LS to give you an idea of what it's going to cost.

Some days it is unbearable, last year somedays hit 35+ degrees. Even with the windows down, it was like a Scandinavian sweat lodge. On trade I be lucky to get $6000, sold privately I could get $8500. I owe $5000 on the loan. I saved $2000 ($165/month), I could do a good $5500 down payment.
Go to the same dealer you originally purchased from, they may be more willing to give your top dollar. I went to a different dealer and they offered me $6200 for my 2012 cruze 1LT with 85,000 miles on the clock, Decided not to trade at that point. 6 months later I went to my original dealer and they offered me $6000 even though 6 months had passed and I put on an additional 10,000 miles. This was very close to top bluebook value for my car with those miles.
If you can call your bank and find out your loan payoff, it will be the price minus all interest charges that you would have on the remaining payments. Much better if you just pay off your current ride before you trade.
