No Dealer Stickers

(((i submitted this post to elicit people's opinions after my manager asked why I removed my decal and license plate frame. The post was almost directly quoted from him, and is not my opinion. I share your sentiment that if I want it on my car, I'll put it on myself.

That said, I've received more than enough commentary to validate my opinion to my boss. thanks

I see it as the dealer using the customers car to advertise without compensating the customer. Also, I don't want some sticker slapped on my cars paint that isn't supposed to be there. It's not a slap in the face to the dealer to ask for the sticker to be removed prior to delivery.

Seeing as how I make piston ring castings for a living, my company never gets any recognition for how many things we do right. We just get the people that do wrong.

I just personally hate dealer stickers. Have you ever heard someone only come to a lot because they saw an ashen gray RS auto sonic with a Freedom Chevrolet sticker on the back, so they drove all the way out to BFE Fremont, MI to go see if they had another one? Have you ever had anyone walk up to you and ask you how purchasing your car from X dealer went? Or, have you ever had someone ask your opinion of buying a car from any OEM dealer? Most of the bad ones have been weeded out. There is still some shoddy service from time to time, but that is on a case by case basis. I personally have zero preference as to which dealer I buy my vehicles from. This will probably be my first and only new car purchase.


I would have been completely fine if they gave me some in the glove box, but I'm not sure that it is ever seen as that big of a deal? Only thing the sonic has on it is a window cling for ducks unlimited in the back window.

The stickers on my car are on the back window. One for the forum, a "save the stick", small IBEW bug and a small one for my local. All are ready to remove and are on the glass, not the paint.

however, they did sneak a license plate frame on it, which I promptly removed down the road, mostly since they shorted me two screws to bolt the plate down with all four bolts and it made a slapping noise in certain conditions...

Here's my issue.... This is what's implied "I'll buy from you, but I'll insult you to your face before I do" or "I'll make my purchase here because it's the right car or right deal, but I'll make sure you know that before I do that I don't want people to know where I bought"

Your perception is not my reality.

It is not my intent to insult anyone (but obviously, you would have taken my request as an insult).

That dealership sticker was not put on at the factory - it was put on by the dealer to advertise. And I'm not being paid to advertise for them.

Another factor is that most of my working life (and I turn 62 in 2 weeks), I've been working with multiple new car dealerships. The dealerships know I didn't buy my car from them, but I don't need to pull up into their lot with a sticker advertising that I didn't buy it from them.

I currently work for an ACDelco, Motorcraft and Mopar warehouse distributor. My company car does not have any dealer stickers on it for the same reason (none of our company owned vehicles do).

If I buy a car from a dealership - that means that I trust them. I don't buy things from places I don't trust.

I've sold cars for a living. My dad spent his entire working career in the automobile selling business.

The best advertising a car dealer can get is by word of mouth.

That being said, if I could find a metal "Mesaba Motors" dealer emblem - I would put it on the trunk of my '64 GTO Convertible. Why? Because that's where my dad sold cars when my car was built. Kind of a tribute to my dad...

Removed my dealer decal first thing...it was a nice vinyl decal as opposed to some crappy sticker.

The dealer license plate frame rubbed the paint..that was a slap in the face showing me advertising their dealer was more important than a customers paint. To think every car on their lot had ruined paint around the license plate....

Here is another perspective. I de-badged my "sonic" and "turbo" from the rear of my hatch. It doesn't mean I hate the Chevy Sonic and turbos are for idiots. I just wanted to clean up the back end.

I also second the dealer sticker is just free advertising. Oddly, automotive dealers are about the only business I can think of that slaps a sales sticker on it....How would you like it if an Autozone employee ran out and stuck a Autozone sticker on your car after you bought some oil and a filter?

I'd think every time I heard that, it would be an opportunity to change their mind(s)... Introduce them to the "boss" or owner, show them the place a little, give them a tour... especially during the paperwork process which takes FOREVER nowadays

i had asked for plate holders instead of the sticker from the gm of the dealer i purchased from . he said alot customers have been asking for that lately and said it wasnt a problem. when i went to pick up the car i noticed a sticker on the back , i wasnt mad and let the gm know that there was a sticker on the car . the gm was not pleased and went straight to the shoop and tore a strip off the guy who worked on my car . that little mis hap got my wife and i alot of free bees . we are also very well taken care of when we take our cars in for service. having them put that stupid sticker on my car has worked out verywell for me.

I needed to give a few managers here some raw feedback from people outside the Store because what I posted is their mentality (and I caught heat for removing mine)

I removed our dealership decal and plate frames for the same reasons y'all did. I love my store but I don't want the paraphernalia on my personal car. If they give me a demo I'll sticker the **** out of it!

My dealership said that if the car had the sticker and front plate holder on it I would qualify for free inspections for life. So they -were- offering to pay me to advertise for them. However, I did not feel that was sufficient pay. I don't feel I got a good deal or good service from them (although their parts department is excellent), and removed the badges accordingly.

I love the car, and so I kept the Chevy emblems, and the Sonic LT and turbo badges, and even paid out of my own pocket for a flexfuel badge.

I do look at other Sonics I see in parking lots to see if they still have their dealer logo, and where it is. My theory is that people who don't feel screwed have less reason to debadge, and also that people who shopped around might have a better dealership, so if I see very few dealer A and a lot of dealer B, maybe next time, I try dealer B.

It's good to see many opinions that mirror my thoughts. Car guys can get stuck in their mindset.

I will say this, it's HOW you ask... not WHAT you ask for. If someone acts like an ******* to get something done with us it definitely affects our willingness to make it happen.

I didnt even bring it up since I knew the dealer would only put a plate frame on the car. Its easy enough to flip the frame around. I also purchased a car off the lot, so its not like I really had much room to argue it anyways. Some of the dealers around here use some awful dealer badges on cars though.

I took of the dealer license plate frame because after giving you five figures for a car and it being a long pain in the ass to do so. I don't have the desire to give you any sort of advertising.

I'm just thankful that the dealers now mostly only use vinyl stickers that can easily be removed. I once purchased a new GMC S-15 that had a dealer emblem that was attached by drilling two holes in the tailgate.

I bought my car from Van Chevrolet in Scottsdale, AZ. I live in Las Vegas, NV.

(and yes, if you buy a Chevrolet Express 2500 form them, you have bought a "Van Chevrolet Van")

There was an (actually very nice quality) cloisonne dealer badge on the rear bumper. It came off, using only my fingernails, at the first fuel stop. No adhesive left behind.

That seems like a fair way to do it. They've got their badge on cars, for buyers who don't care, and the buyers who do care can remove it easily.

There's also a license plate frame, which I haven't removed... yet. That's another fair way for dealers to advertise - if the buyer doesn't like advertising the dealership, any booger-eating moron with a screwdriver can remove it in 2 minutes.

But back to the original post. If I paint your house, can I paint my business logo on your wall? No? Why not?
