Oil Change

Hey Everyone,

When should you change your oil? Certain amount of kilometers or when the oil life indicator percentage goes low?

Anyone know the recommended kilometers or the percentage you should change the oil in your car?

If its the first change its a good idea before 2000 miles. If it after that u can do what the car says . IMO I still change mine every 5000 miles

I changed the filter on mine at 800 miles and am at 1600 now. The oil will be changed at 2k with 3 - 4k between after the first. You are going to here 50 different opinions from the members here and most probably don't follow the Oil life indicator as it will have you changing at levels outside of comfort levels.

A good base should be following your owners manual and adjust to what fits your lifestyle.

I waited till 3000 to do mine and still had 64% on the oil thing. I waited as long as I did because I switched it to Mobil 1 and wanted the motor to break in properly. I now know you don't have to wait that long to switch to synthetic so do what makes you comfortable.

According the Owner's Manual pg. 10-12, if a Code 82 (change engine oil soon) DIC message comes on. See Vehicle Messages on page 5‑26. Change the oil as soon as possible within the next 1 000 km (600 mi). It is possible that, if driving under the best conditions, the oil life system might indicate that an oil change is not necessary for
up to a year. The engine oil and filter must be changed at least once a year and, at this time, the system must be reset.

Also, check out your Maintenance Schedule on pg. 11-6 for further details.

change it when the car tells you to. unless you're racing or using the wrong oil, there's absolutely no reason to change it before.

with the combination of today's oils and the current designs of the engines, there's almost no bypassing of hydrocarbons into the oil, and materials are stronger and dont break down as easily. also, filters remove much finer debris than they used to. pcv systems are much better, and engines are much better at maintaining oil temperatures.

so, opinsions will differ, people will do what they will. changing the oil before the engine breaks in is a bad idea. especially if you're goin to go synthetic. a synthetic oil is more slippery and the engine will take much longer to properly break in. so, as far as i'm concerned...the first oil change will be done normally, when the car tells me to. then it's synthetic and i'll decide when to change it depending on the stick. check the oil often...at least every other gas-up. if it's not dirty, there's no reason to change it.

EXACTLY what Vanessa says. Use your DIC message as the guide and use at least the minumum oil quality stated in the owner's manual. There have been tremendous progress in modern engine build quality and especially in today's oil formulations. The old break in oil and 3000 mile mandatory change (except if you forget to reset DIC at your last change) is old school. Is an unnecessary waste of your money and resources and is not environmentally friendly. (No I am NOT a tree hugger.) It just make sense. The new DIC takes a LOT of factors in consideration when calculating it's oil change recommendation. Engine/ambient temps, RPMs, road vs. city miles and many other parameters.. not just miles or time. They build the car and back it.. I would go with their recommendations. Even major emergency services organizations have abandoned the old required 3,000 mile changes for this procedure with no ill effects.

Exactly! All it costs you is 5 quarts and a filter. If that is what you need for peace of mind, go for it. *thumbs up*
