change it when the car tells you to. unless you're racing or using the wrong oil, there's absolutely no reason to change it before.
with the combination of today's oils and the current designs of the engines, there's almost no bypassing of hydrocarbons into the oil, and materials are stronger and dont break down as easily. also, filters remove much finer debris than they used to. pcv systems are much better, and engines are much better at maintaining oil temperatures.
so, opinsions will differ, people will do what they will. changing the oil before the engine breaks in is a bad idea. especially if you're goin to go synthetic. a synthetic oil is more slippery and the engine will take much longer to properly break in. so, as far as i'm concerned...the first oil change will be done normally, when the car tells me to. then it's synthetic and i'll decide when to change it depending on the stick. check the oil often...at least every other gas-up. if it's not dirty, there's no reason to change it.
