Oil filter collapsed last two oil changes.

Anyone else have there oil filters collapse? Last two oil changes I have noticed this. I use the dexos oil and change the oil before the oil life monitor gets to 15%. Most of my driving is highway. And I don't floor it all the time either. I use Napa filters. Just wondering thinking about changing it at least every 7500 miles now. The oil monitoring its well over 10000 between changes little to far I think.

Just wanted some opinions and to see if anyone else has noticed this.

This is a common problem with many aftermarket filters for this application. USE the ACDelco PF2257G.

Which oil are you using? Dexos is just a rating not an oil.

I change mines every 3k most say I waste money but I think that's why It's lasted so long with my miles with small issues

I have had this happen when I used a cheap filter.

Get a oem one and it will not happen.

Stick with ACDelco filters. Wix filters are excellent too. Using crappy filters will void your warranty if something happens to your engine.

WIX makes the NAPA filters the the original poster had collapse on him. They are the same thing - NAPA just takes the "5" off the part number.

A collapsed filter will void the warranty.

That said, WIX makes many very good filters. It's just that this particular application (and a few others) they are prone to failure.

I noticed this issue early on and found that if you lubricate the felt on the bottom of the filter with fresh oil, it does not twist up and no collapse!

I have never had either collapse or twist on me. It is possible that WIX makes the NAPA filter, but to a lower standard, hence the different number on it. This is fairly common practice.

I have never had either collapse or twist on me. It is possible that WIX makes the NAPA filter, but to a lower standard, hence the different number on it. This is fairly common practice.

I work for an ACD/MTC/Mopar warehouse distributor. We also sell several aftermarket brands including WIX.

In working with the WIX factory representative, the NAPA Gold series filters are the exact same filter as the WIX. The NAPA Silver line is also made by WIX which are identical to the WIX Pro-tec line.

The only difference in the part #'s is the extra digit at the start of the filter - #757674 vs 57674 for the Sonic filter.

WIX also make the NAPA Air Filters and are the same filter.

WIX does not make ACDelco filters.

Fram is one of the worst filters on the market. I wouldn't use them if I could get them free. In the industry we call them the "orange can of death".

In a recent comparison of entry level filters we compete with, our house brand "Pronto" oil filter (our economy filter) # PO2222 (ACDelco PF48 equivalent) was compared to the Parts Master and Fram equivalents.

The Pronto had 28 pleats in the filter media, the Parts Master had 15 pleats and the Fram had 14 - or half the filtering media of our lowest price filter (I sell most Pronto filters for well under $2.00 each).

Yeah, I probably should start using something better. Right after I bought the car, I went and bought 3 different oil filters, a AC Delco, Fram, and a STP. I compared them and the Fram looked to me like the better quality. The filter media appeared thicker and more sturdy I guess you could say. So I returned the other 2. I'm not sure what you mean by "pleats" in the filter media. Could you explain that to me? I'm new to cartridge filters. This is the first car I've owned that uses them. Next oil change I'll try another brand.

Unless you're using other modifications you have no reason to re-engineer (or let FRAM re-engineer) what GM already did. And believe me, usually companies like FRAM cannot do better than what GM did and they often sell a "one size fits all, kind of" product.

That's good to know. I'm gonna use the OEM filter next oil change. The only reason I considered Fram is because I had a 97 Ford Aspire that I used cheap Walmart oil and fram filters and when I finally traded it in it had 250,000 miles and was still running strong and burned no oil. But I want the best for my Sonic and hope to drive it for another 10 years or more.

When you looked at the WIX and the ACD, was it a canister or a cartridge filter?

If it was a cansister, all you can see after removing the filter from the box is a metal canister and a gasket. FWIW (and I say this tongue in cheek... ) the WIX is white and the ACD is blue - very easy to tell them apart once they are out of the box - even if you forgot to look at the part numbers...:banana:

If it was a cartridge, did you take the time to count the pleats?

Regardless - the OP has had 2 consecutive WIX filters fail on his Sonic. We haven't had anyone post on a failure of an ACD filter.
