Now I want to talk about Oil. For a long time BMW was a huge fan of Mobil 1. That changed a long time ago. Bit of a break up back in 2016. Mobil 1 honestly isn’t the best. Yes it’s available everywhere and cheap but it’s not the best. Mini Cooper S also used various plugs over the years. NGK being on of them. Today Champion makes that rebranded plug. And it’s honestly not a bad plug.
Mobil 1 has been around forever. Back in 2016 that came to an end with BMW products.
So what’s the best Oil. I never say the manufacturer. Project Farm on YouTube does some good tests. But at the end of the day.
The best oil for a Turbo Car is full synthetic Dexos certified if it’s a GM product. Mini Coopers had a bad habit of coking the oil lines to the turbo resulting in seized turbos. Our cars I doubt it.
In my 2013 BMW Mini S and 2016 BMW M235i. I used Penzoil Ultra Platnium or Platnium. On the Sonic it would have to be Penzoil 5W-30 Platnium (Not Ultra Platnium, Ultra not Dexos certified). Never had a complaint with Penzoil Oils and I ran Mobil 1 for years in a lot of cars. On the BMW and Mini sometimes I’d bring the Oil and Filter to Dealer and say oil change parts in trunk. $17 bucks later. The reason I did this is the dealer documented the maintenance on car fax. Helps when you go to sell it. Do it yourself or go to Jiffy lube no documentation. But our Sonics our cheap anyways if your just here to drive it to the grave I wouldn’t worry about it.
Stock filters are generally the best. I see too many people going to KN and stuff for oil filters or cheap knock offs they are going to be too tough to where they restrict flow that much or too soft to the point the thing collapses under pressure. Same thing on every car. Stay OEM on the oil filter. AC Delco.
Mobil 1 isn’t a bad oil. But Penzoil Platnium 5w-30 for around the same price has it beat by far thanks to the way it’s refined. Natural Gas. The Manufacturers oil is never that great. Find a good Oil that’s Dexos certified. I just gave you the one I’d use.
Royal Purple etc. That stuff is heavy it’s viscosity is rediculous at cold temps. By the time that starts flowing your doing engine damage. Honestly sometimes more isn’t always better. Penzoil isn’t a Marketing joke. Also a shell product.
So if Penzoil Platinum is so cheap and that new. How is it so good? It’s easy. The United States of America uses most the Crude oil it refines. Buys a lot from over seas. But it’s the King of Natural Gas. Yup you guys guessed it? America is the king of Natural Gas. Which is why we don’t have much electric heat and electric showers. Penzoil and Shell figured this out a long time ago. Then they made it work not that long ago. Aka you have a cheap superior oil they can mass produce and make money off of. And no matter how you test it. It out performs Mobil 1 by a long shot. Think of it like a distilled water. Taking natural gas and turning it to a liquid you have less of the bad stuff.
The oil tests high everytime and that’s personally what I would tell you to use.
