Overboost issues on canned and custom BNR tunes

So I've already contacted BNR on my issue, but in hopes that someone on here has experienced a similar issue, I will post here too.

For a few months now my sonic has been occasionally losing power with seemingly over-boost issues. When I was on a slightly custom tune from Jerry, it would do this mainly on on-ramps when I would maintain the throttle position for several seconds. Then bang, blow-off noise then no power.

So recently, I went back to the BNR canned tune to see if this would resolve the issue. Surprisingly, it seems to be worse as the car will actually throw the over-boost code unlike before when it wouldn't show a code just a loss in power. Also, it tends to do it more on the canned tune.

My question is, can this be resolved with some more tuning? Or is there a weakest link part that is likely at fault here? Perhaps the wastegate actuator or bypass valve? Thanks all!

I had a similar issue. They loosened the overboost parameters or something like that and that fixed the problem.

You can either turn off the code, raise the limit it triggers at, or adjust the target boost/desired airload values. Either way, yes it's fixable through the tune.

So I'll occasionally get a code. I haven't had a chance to actually check the code yet, but with the way the car behaves when it happens one can only assume that is what is happening since it seems to go into limp mode every time.

I will follow up with Jerry in the next week or two. Hoping my solution is what Jesus was saying.

Couldn't tell you about any possible air leaks, how would I check that? Ultra gauge?

Once every hundred miles or so, my boost will cut to 5psi and wont build. I have to use my handheld to clear DTC even if the CEL is not lit up. Then it runs fine , until it happens again.

There isn't anything in particular that will trigger the code besides a WOT pull or when you do a boosted launch. It's sporadic with the WOT pull, more consistent when launching. You can watch the boost just spike to 24-25PSI out of no where but most times it'll hit 18-21PSI without spiking. If you lift slightly when you see boost spike, You can prevent the codes from popping up. I've experienced this issue and would always get a 2227 with the 0238. It's really just a tuning issue. Definitely check for leaks first since that can exacerbate the problem. Though this issue is annoying as hell.

I did notice when I had my tune redone to fix this issue, the car was having some issues building full boost at times and other times it would hit full boost. (Usually would hit 18psi only and sometimes would touch 21psi.) There was maybe one or two times since, where the codes popped back up two weeks after I had closed the ticket. The weird part was that I had driven 1500 miles in those 2 weeks without any issues. Two weeks after I had closed my BNR ticket.

Though I'm pretty sure there is something else causing the issue at this point and I've just been too damn lazy to take care of it. The car has sat for a couple months now as a result.

I hate to ask this question In public, but is this more specific to a certain tuner, or is it more of a blanket issue? Considering giving ZZP a go, but it sucks that I've vested so much time and datalogging Into the tune I have now just to have this annoying issue that can't be fixed. I've checked for leaks, replaced stuff anyway, logged, sent, received, flashed.... wits end with it. I changed the boost sensor as well.

Like blue moon said mine was during WOT, my issue was resolved as soon as I captured the issue in a log and sent it in. There's really no reason to change tuners, and idk about the AC. El Paso is 330 days of sunshine so my AC is literally always on.

Jerry is pretty good at resolving this issue and can get you squared away once you get the issue captured. If you have a BNR or forge WGA, this issue can also be a result of the WG duty settings needing to be tweaked from where the value originally was if you had installed the part as of recently. You should also take in account which spring was used if you have the Forge BPV installed as well.

I do have the WGA. And my BPV oy came with 1 spring. I'll try get it captured when I get home this week.

Finally got the issue captured today when logging. Twice in 60 miles. Hopefully a fix is on the way.

Got an update from BNR, put 100 miles on tonight and no limp mode so far....yeah!

I had 450 good miles, now back to the same issue. UGH. anyone else have any suggestions or Insight?

So about two weeks ago I took the sonic on a road trip. I brought my autocal and had it set to record when I was expecting it to go into limp mode. Sure enough on a couple of on-ramps it did just that while I was recording. I've since sent those logs to Jerry. Just waiting for a response. Will be two weeks this Monday. If nothing in the next few days, I plan on reaching out to the support email for an eta. Will post a follow up here when I get the fix from Jerry and some miles on the car.
