P0597 - Thermostat Housing Replacement

For over a year I've had an "Intermittent" P0597 Code - 43K miles

Only issue "when" code was lit is that car would NOT remote start.

Always being a tad leary of Dealers, I figured I'd attempt once again to solve the issue myself.

Bought the "Delco" Housing & Tube/Hose (that is supposed to break 90% of the time) on-line. (Note: My Tube/Hose did NOT break upon removal)

The replacement was pretty straight forward after watching a few videos on YouTube, only lost about 1/2 Gallon of Dexcool in the process. Easy to refill.

I cleared the code - now to run it a few days to see if all is well.

My 2015 got this code after only 30K miles, but it was replaced under warranty. Two years and 10K later it's still fine, but once the warranty is up I'll take care of it myself. I'm only up to 40K, hopefully it won't happen until at least +60K.

Over a week now, no codes, State Emission Inspection went well. OBD Reader (& YouTube) finally paid off for me.

I've put 4 on mine so far, this last one was the AC Delco part instead of the lifetime warranty autozone stuff and it has lasted quite a while. One of the parts store thermostats failed after about 10k miles.

Common issue. Takes less than an hour to remedy.

Feb 2020 UPDATE -

The $30 something Replacement unit from Amazon FAILED after 7 months.
Same code, "Pre-Heater" OPENED - Car runs fine, just shows Check Engine Light / throws code and won't allow Remote Start

I marked the original review as DO NOT BUY

Replaced with the NAPA (supposedly "Lifetime" warranty)

We'll see how long it lasts

I used to keep a spare on hand which is why after selling the car I still have an AC Delco original I bought from the dealer.

Cool so I’m not the only one with a p0597. Mine finally came on as well. 2012 Lt 1.8 mt. The light started coming and going when I reached 150k Kms on the odo. Replacing the thermo and housing along with the timing belt, water pump and serp belt soon. But man, thank god these things, most of the time, fail open. Musta been 2000kms driven on an open thermo. Does wonders for gas mileage too. For all the wasted fuel, I could have bought the thermostat and housing 3x over. Lol
