anyone elses paint scratch super easy? I'm finding more and more scratches everytime I look at my car. I have the granite black metallic.

I wash it twice a week and wax it once a month... I have one chip in my fender all the way to the metal and the paint appears to be such a thin layer of paint it might as well not be there. I'm thinking the paint is just super thin and weak.

It's been discussed before that the Sonic has a thin clear coat. Some wanted to have another layer added but it would be really expensive. I guess I got lucky, I used to have a ridiculously long commute, 60 miles one way, and put 30k miles on my car in 9 months. I only have a few chips on my front bumper.

You are hurtling a large metal object down a surface that comprises of rocks glued together at 120 kms/hr (sounds more impressive than 74 mph). All by a slight rotation of your ankle joint. Just think about that and it makes sense that the inevitable mark will happen.

I have just plain ol black and I got two lovely scratches down the hood from cats. I've tried to buff out but looks like ill have to wet sand them... >.< always hated wetsanding
Modern automotive paint is waterborne ---- and it is not as hard as when paints were solvent based. This is not uniquie to Sonics or GM. It is all auto paint.
The issue is compounded with a dark color. The dark color paint does not scratch more but it shows the scratches more. The reflective properties of light color paint conceal more of the scratches. I have never seen a dark color car that does not have scratches upon careful examination - even at concours car shows. From 10 feet they can look good but from 10 inches, the scratches show up.

Modern paint will even scratch with a fingernail. Imagine what happens when a piece of dust is pressed into the finish. Dust usually has fine particles of silica - silica is hard and sharp - ie used to be used to make sandpaper (which is why sandpaper is called sandpaper since sand is silica).
Washing will not remove scratches - quite the opposite - it contriubutes to scratching. Even the most careful washing will press some particles of dirt against the paint ---- scratching the paint. You just have to be as careful as possible.
Modern polymer waxes are very thin and will not fill in many scratches. Carnauba is thicker and will fill in some very light scratches.

Scratches, dings, dents, unfortunately they are all mostly inevitable when driving a vehicle as your daily driver. I try to stay away from other cars as much as possible, but there are always unavoidable situations, like a parking garage, parking on a busy street, apartment parking, ballgame parking, etc.
I still get pissed every time I see the small nickel sized ding on my dirver door. Not super noticeable but on a sunny day it really shows good. I was thinking about having the dent fixed for about $60 but knowing my luck Ill get another one soon after. I am pretty much waiting for my next inevitable ding to get it fixed since most places charge you a base price for one dent fixed, and each one after the first are a lot cheaper. I guess it just goes with the unfortunate reality that most people dont care about things that are not theirs smh.

I've had my car for 4 months and she was a demo car for over a year before I picked her up. Aside from one buffoon who drove into my passenger front fender, she doesn't have a single scratch on her!

My white paint has 2 chips on the hood, and from the snow and ice being filled with dirt, it just basically took away my rear bumper paint. Glad I'm not the only one. Only 4ish months old :sadbanana:

I only have a tiny chip from hitting a cyclist. How you all manage to have chipping paint is beyond me.
