Question Regarding Spare Keys

Hi all,

Managed to grab a 2013 Sonic RS with 9k miles for $14050 OTD (excluding tax/tags/title) this weekend, but it only came with one key.

Now, rather than go to a dealer to get an exact replica of the master key for several hundred dollars, I would like to know if there are cheaper alternatives to have for a spare key? It doesn't need to be able to remote lock/unlock or remote start. Just needs to open the door and start the car. What is my best route for something like that and how much will it cost me?

I replaced a key (fire did the original in) through the dealer for about $77 including tax. The replacement is exact. Took about two weeks to get it after I ordered.

This was the flip key fob with the remote options? That doesn't seem too unreasonable. I thought it was like 300-400$ because of the chip and electronics in it.

Yep, laser cut key and fob with remote keyless entry for the six speed manual transmission but I see no reason the auto trans version would be more.

I think the Corvette C7 version may approach $200 but the Sonic key/fob is definitely affordable.

The dealer is one of the 10% of list for parts but we have several around here and you may have some near you. You need your driver license and registration (for obvious reasons) when ordering.

So I called some dealers around me and unfortunately they charge ~$150 for the key. Is it possible I could call other places to have the key sent to me via mail?

OTD price always means all-inclusive, so, it means that all taxes, tags, etc are included in the cost. If you're listing the cost before tax and title and tags, it cannot be called OTD price.

Ahhhh gotcha. OTD was ~$14750 then.

This is probably a remote start key price. If u get the key without remote start should be in the $70 range.


If I die, bury me in my truck, because it's never been in a hole it can't get out of!

The key in not that expensive. I've seen them on Ebay for $18.00. It's not the cost of the key it's the cost you have to pay the dealer to re-program the car for that key.
