Quieter exhaust

I currently have a ZZP catback with muffler and need to quiet it down for my little one in the backseat. Is the Borla/GMPP system quieter? I see it uses a resonator along with a muffler. Should I just go back to stock or is that a lot more restrictive? I plan on going with a mild tune in the future if it matters. Thanks.

I have the same setup as you,and added a resonator because that to was one of my reasons my lil munchkin. Specifically I added a dual chambered resonator (12"-16" will fit depending on how quiet you want to go) Let me tell you it made a world of difference, the tone is just perfect.

Yeah, that thought occurred to me today. I was thinking of using a 2.5" Dynomax Race Magnum muffler since its so compact. What brand of dual chambered resonator did you use? Thanks.

Do you have any of the cat delete sections or are all the factory cats still intact?

I ask because it was going to be my next purchase, but I don't want it super loud. I was under the impression that it is actually pretty quiet for an aftermarket exhaust.

If you have the 1.4t you should be fine with a 2 1/2" exhaust and a 14" resonator and muffler. I run my SLP cat back with no cats and just a muffler and couldn't stand it, no cats and a resonator and muffler and it was great. Little to no drone and it was just the right amount of noise (for me, I like my exhausts quite).

if you really want a quiet exhaust system but still have the performance aspect just go with a Walker Quiet-Flow Muffler that allows the performance but keeps the system quiet like a stock OEM muffler does without the restrictions that come with a stock OEM System. Should quiet that thing right down then.

but if you want some rumble yet but quieter then do what the others said and just add a nice quality Resonator unit to the system. Just throwing that out there for you.

I will never put walker or dynomax exhaust on my car, its trash IMO. Real cheap matals are used in their exhaust. If u want quiet and dome have a cat, put one in. It just has to be hi-flow

I bought the ZZP and had the same issue. I had installed the DDM test pipe before, so I ordered the cat back with muffler because of all the reviews saying how quiet it was. It ended up being a little too loud for my taste (and my son wouldn't fall asleep in the car anymore). I found a resonator for a 2002 Monte Carlo from Napa perfectly replaced the front straight section of the ZZP right after the secondary cat delete pipe. It was about an inch shorter, so as an added bonus the exhaust tip didn't stick out so much. Way quieter, and I think it cost like $80.

Interesting Walker Quiet Flows were mentioned as I'm putting those on my Corvette later this year. I think I'm going to add the resonator. In response to Karmike2, I still have all my cats. The system is fairly quiet. I does get louder over time however. Its not obnoxious during regular driving but gets loud enough to vibrate some of the rear interior panels at wide open throttle. Also remember, I'm not a kid, so my tolerance for loud exhaust has decreased dramatically over time.

I am in the same boat as you Rockcrusher. At 43 I am not a kid and would like some rumble, but I wouldn't want interior panels vibrating when I open it up. I do have the 1.4T by the way.

I wasn't planning on doing any of the test pipe or cat delete sections either. I am already tuned and from what I learned contacting either Vince (Trifecta) or Brian (Vermont Tuning) it seems like just a cat back exhaust isn't going to make a huge power increase anyway. I would like a little more rumble though.

Run the ZZP down pipe and high flow cat test pipe. You'll gain flow and still have a cat to muffle the exhaust, run a a resonator and muffler and you should be fine. That set-up will be loud. I was running the ZZP downpipe, ZZP midpipe, ZZP high flow cat with SLP resonator and muffler and it was annoying. Went back to the stock downpipe and it is tolerable. I do miss the power from the downpipe though.

I don't really understand how the OP believes the cat-back with muffler is too loud. You can barely hear it with that configuration.

The full ZZP exhaust from downpipe back with their muffler and an additional resonator will in no way be loud.

Different people have different perceptions of "loud". To me, it was loud. The OP will have to draw his own conclusions.

Update. I ordered and installed the shortest stainless steel bottle resonator Vibrant makes and it worked perfectly. Windows down, it sounds nearly like it did before, just a touch quieter and smoother. Windows up, its nice and quiet for my little one in the backseat. No drone and best of all, even with the engine wound up, no vibrating interior panels.

Removing the cats is going to give you the biggest improvements, a bigger cat back compared to removing two blockages in the exhaust doesn't compare.

I did at one point, I just had the ZZP catless dp and test pipe. The rest was stock. It increased the sound of the turbo spool a lot, and thats about it as far as I remember. Now its Straight piped turbo back. I've gotten pulled over 4 times, 2 citations were issued. 1 neighbor had the cops come to my house, and a second neighbor called the home owners association which resulted in police showing up to my house only to put a citation on my brothera truck because its totaled and parked on the street hahahaha... I need to quiet my exhaust I just don't want it tool quiet. I really just like too here the spool of the turbo.
