Rear bumper removal / RS bumper install

well here is my write up on how to remove you LAME stock sonic bumper and replace it with some MAD TYTE JDM RS bumper.


part 1 stock bumper removal

step 1. first you need to remove the 10 screws that hold the rear fender liner to the bumper, there are 5 on each side and they are all T-20 torx heads

step 2 remove the two clips that hold the bottom of the bumper to the car. these clips can be a pain in the ass, the best way to get them is to take two flat headed screw drivers place on on each side of the clip and pull out the inner part of the clip to unlock it. then pry the entire clip out

step 3 pull out on the out on the sides of the bumper to un-clip them from the car, then pull back on the center of the bumper to remove it. this part may take some time, as the bumper is cliped into place good and tight . do your best not to break anything!

step 4 admire your work

step 5 have a beer (only if your above the legal drinking age) :banana:

Part 2 RS bumper install

step 1 get yourself a RS bumper and plate part # 95472629 - bumper cover
95472628 - black plastic plate that goes on the bottom of rear bumper cover

step 2 install the bumper cover without the bottom plate onto the car, you want to clip the center of the bumper on first then the outside.

step 3 install the 2 clips that hold the bottom of the bumper on the car

step 4. install the bottom plate on the bumper cover

step 5. install the 10 screws that hold the fender liner to bumper and the few clips that are only on the RS bumper, from what i can tell the fender liner for the RS sonic is slightly different, but stock sonic fender liners work with a little modification. you may have to drill a few extra screw holes in the bumper plate to attach the fender liners.

step 6. check the fit of the bumper, it will be very close to the exhaust because the cutout for the exhaust on the RS bumper is about 3 inches farther left then the stock sonic.

step 7. if you feel that the exhaust is too close to the side of the bumper, measure how far you need to move the exhaust over and mark it. take the exhaust off the car and re-bend and cut the last two exhaust hangers with an oxy acetylene torch and a saw of your choice.

CAUTION: MODIFYING YOUR EXHAUST HANGERS WITH A TORCH CAN BE DANGEROUS , DON'T TRY IT WITH THE EXHAUST STILL ON THE CAR, AND DON'T USE A OXY ACETYLENE TORCH IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOUR DOING. ANY DAMAGE TO YOU OR YOUR CAR ISN'T MY FAULT. IF YOU DON'T FEEL COMFORTABLE DOING THIS STEP TAKE IT TO A SHOP!!!

step 8 9 and 10. have a beer , admire your work

im too broke to get the other RS bits right now, the only reason im doing the bumper is because someone hit me and messed up the old bumper and the RS is only a little bit more $$$ to replace

test fit for the RS bumper went good, looks like it should fit. just sent the bumper in for paint and im waiting on a bumper bracket that should be here tomorrow.:banana:

well bumper is on, but the exhaust cutout on the RS bumper is about 3 inches farther to the left side of the car then the stock bumper so i'm in the middle of some exhaust modifications right now, should have the RS install wright up done latter tonight.
