RS Cluster Defect?

So I noticed a few days after taking delivery a small (about 1/2") "gash" on the inside of the tach where the reset pinhole is. Had it replaced today and there's one on the replacement also.

They showed me the old one, so it's evident they actually replaced it. Is this somehow a design thing on all of them, or could it be an actual defect? You don't feel anything on the outside if you try to touch it.

I dont even have the RS, I have a LT Sedan, and that small line/crack is on mine as well in the same spot too.

Never had it on any other cars I've owned. Just making sure its not cracked or something.

I have it on mine (RS), and someone else mentioned having it in the factory screwups thread. I plan on ignoring it :thumbup:

What happens is actually in the mold there is a pin that the plastic has to mold around, when this happens you get a "knit line"

This is a molding flaw, and very hard to adjust the machine to totally get rid of this.

A combination of a hotter mold and slower injection speed of the plastic would have helped this, but to me it looks pretty darn good considering.

Didn't know that, thanks. It's harder to see on the new one, but the service rep still thought it looked cracked. I'll have to let them know they're all like that.

I have it as well on my LT, and the several Sonic models I looked at shortly before buying mine had the same thing. Hasn't bothered me at the least.

Thanks for the input on the molding process, Chrish051873. I figured it was something with the manufacturing process. My Sonic interior seems to be more of a dust collector than any car I've ever owned, so if I clean off the cluster lens, a day later it's covered in dust again -- that sticks out more than this manufacturing blemish.
