Rumble in the seats from the engine

Sometimes when I come to a stop my whole car vibrates. I can feel it in my seat and my dad rode with me one time and said he could feel in in the passenger seat. I asked the dealership to look at it when they changed the oil in my car the other day but they did not do it, and I was on a strict schedule that day. I just want to know if it is normal. It happens quite a bit.

I thought I saw a thread on this awhile ago but with no definite answer. I saw one guy said he had to have his transmission rebuilt to have it fixed. If that is that case and it isn't hurting anything I don't want to do that. Everything else works great and I don't want to chance the dealer messing something else up.

Thanks for the reply! Yeah, I guess we have to assume it won't cause in issues in the long run. My friend's equinox does it too.

I get the same vibration your talking about. I have an ultra gauge and I was checking every little detail when that happens. So I noticed this happens when the car is in idle and it goes to open loop for about 3-5 seconds you get that shake your talking about. I was told by my dealer this is normal and they made me sit in another Sonic and did the same thing.

I'm going to assume its a automatic. From what I understand, it is supposed to shift into neutral when stopped. It sounds like yours is not.

My Honda does the same thing.

didn't think to ask, assumed manual. good catch, and likely pinpoint accurate.

Why would it shift into neutral? That does not make sense as it would have an extra shift when you accelerate. Also how would it anticipate when you are going to hit the gas? I guess im trying to understand why. Also, just talked to someone at school who has a sonic, they have the same issue. Both of ours are LT 2013's. Sounds normal to me so far.

I have no idea why. I'm sure it's a stupid reason. Try manually shifting into neutral when it does it and see if it goes away.

$ub is right.. If it happens shift into neutral. Your revs will go up slightly for a short bit then they will drop back down..

Tried it. Sure enough, it does go away when shifting into neutral.

That's good now we know what the issue is and that you don't have another underlying issue

No clue. Don't have a auto so never looked into it.

The "shifting into neutral" thing is an effort to save a little gas.
When the transmission is in gear, even when not moving, the engine is trying to spin the gears, move the car.
In neutral, there is no load on the engine, so it can run move freely.

It is supposed to shift into Drive as soon as you release the brake to get moving again.

The car does not shift to neutral if you are using manual mode.

My 2012 does not shift to neutral in Drive, never has. I feel like it is a programming error for the first year automatics.
But i also use manual mode 99% of the time anyway

I believe there's been a TSB with a reprogram to fix the complaint.

So, is it really worth it to take it in to the dealer? I have heard some people say every single sonic does this and so maybe they screwed up at the factory?
